The Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine employs a novel and customized approach for professional development of its faculty. The annual review process involves each faculty member meeting with the department chair and division director. This process was formalized with an individual electronic professional development review (PDR) tool. The focus of this exercise is to ensure that faculty have the mentorship and resources needed for career and research development and to gain a better understanding of what each faculty member considers necessary for his/her own professional advancement. Based on the data obtained from the PDRs, resources are deployed throughout an effective infrastructure to facilitate and optimize research activities, increase engagement in research and discovery, and create a mechanism of seed funding to increase competitiveness of grant applications.
