Perianesthesia Nursing Services at The Johns Hopkins Hospital is on the leading edge of technology, surgical, and procedural recovery.

What We Do

Our Perianesthesia Nurses work collaboratively with a highly trained group of Anesthesiologists, Surgeons, and Perioperative staff to provide the utmost in post anesthesia/ post sedation recovery. Our focus is on high quality patient care and patient safety. To provide this high quality level of care, we promote and have a large percentage of nursing staff that are certified as experts in perianesthesia nursing (Certified Post Anesthesia Nurses – CPAN, & Certified Ambulatory Perianesthesia Nurses – CAPA).

Beyond patient care, our nursing staffs create and participate in Evidence-Based Practice Nursing Research, and Quality Improvement  initiatives that guarantee the care we give to our patients is the safest available.

The Perianesthesia nursing staff follow the practices of The Johns Hopkins Professional Practice Model. We Achieve in excellence in many ways. Electroconvulsive Stimulation (ECT) Prep and PACU ECT and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS)

ECT Prep/ PACU is a 6 bay center that flexes Prep and PACU within the unit. We treat inpatient and outpatient ECT and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation patients (rTMS patients do not require PACU recovery). We treat all forms of depression and mood disorders. Our nursing staff are all trained in PACU and Psychiatric care.

Endoscopy Prep and PACU Endoscopic Procedures and Bronchoscopies

Endoscopy is a 38 bay Prep and PACU. We specialize in endoscopic procedures and bronchoscopies. We also provide complex and innovative therapeutic procedures for our special patient populations.

Johns Hopkins Outpatient Care (JHOC) Prep/PACU Orthopedics, Gynecology, Urology, Pain Management, OLHN, Plastics, Breast, and General Surgery

JHOC Prep/PACU is an 18 bed unit (10 Phase I and 8 Phase II) which specializes in the care of adult patient receiving orthopedics, gynecology, urology, pain management, OLHN, plastics, breast, and general surgeries. Working in conjunction with the JHOC Perioperative staff, JHOC Prep/PACU provides the full range of perianesthesia care for these patient populations.

Zayed 8 LDR/OR/PACU has 6 triage beds, 10 LDR beds, 3 operating room beds and 3 PACU beds. We specialize in the care of adult patient receiving care during birth and during cesarean section, D&C/D&E, cervical cerclage, and fetal therapy procedures.

Zayed 4 Pediatric Preop and PACU (Zayed PrePACU 4) Outpatient and Inpatient Surgeries, ENT, Genitourinary, Orthopedic, NUS, Plastics, Gastrointestinal, Dental, Procedural and Radiologic

Zayed PrePACU 4  Pediatric  is a 32 bed unit that cares for patients newborn to 22 years of age. Procedures include outpatient and inpatient surgeries, ENT, genitourinary, orthopedic, NUS, plastics, gastrointestinal, patients. Zayed PrePACU 4 also cares for interventional and radiologic patients (IR, NIR, MRI, CVIL). Working in conjunction with the Zayed 4 peds perioperative /intra-procedural staff, Zayed PrePACU 4 provides the full range of perianesthesia care for these unique patient populations.

Radiation Oncology and Molecular Science Recovery Head/Neck, Prostate, Central Nervous System/Brain, Gynecological, Breast, Gastrointestinal, Pediatrics, Lymphoma, and Thoracic

Radiation Oncology and Molecular Science Recovery is a 3 bay unit located on the first floor of the Weinberg building. This group also has additional treatment sites in Green Spring Station, Bayview Medical Center, Sibley Memorial Hospital, and The Johns Hopkins Health Care and Surgery Center in Bethesda, Maryland. These units take care of patients requiring Radiation or Molecular Science procedures for head/neck, prostate, central nervous system/brain, gynecological, breast, gastrointestinal, pediatrics, lymphoma, and thoracic cancer. We have a variety of specialty clinics (prostate, breast, GI, gyn, Head and neck, CNS, GU, etc) We offer interstitial brachytherapy and tandem, ovoid and tandem, and ring procedures—done in our OR. These procedures treat and can cure aggressive forms of gynecological cancers.

Weinberg 3 Prep/PACU is a 28 bed unit that cares for adult patients undergoing gastrointestinal, genitourinary, gynecological, surgical oncology, otolaryngology, head and neck, and plastics surgeries. Working in conjunction with the Weinberg 3 perioperative staff, Weinberg 3 Prep/PACU provides the full range of perianesthesia care for these patient populations.

Wilmer eye Institute has established itself as one of the premier eye care centers.  Wilmer Prep/PACU, located in the Bendann Surgical Pavilion, is a 25 bed unit (10 Phase I & II) caring for adult and pediatric patients receiving ocular procedures and surgeries. Working in conjunction with the Wilmer Perioperative staff, Wilmer Prep/PACU provides a full range of perianesthesia care for this important patient population.

Zayed PrePACU 3 is a 43 bed unit that cares for adult patients undergoing neurologic, spinal, orthopedic, transplant, trauma surgeries. Zayed PrePACU 3 also cares for interventional and neuro interventional procedural patients. Working in conjunction with the Zayed 3 perioperative /intra-procedural staff, Zayed PrePACU 3 provides the full range of perianesthesia care for these patient populations.

Zayed PrePACU 5 also cares for cardiac interventional radiology and electrophysiology procedural patients.  Working in conjunction with the Zayed 5 perioperative /intra-procedural staff, Zayed PrePACU 5 provides the full range of perianesthesia care for these patient populations.
