Dr. Goswami Appointed PCCCM Chief

We are extremely pleased to announce the appointment of Dheeraj Goswami, MD as Division Chief for the Division of Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care Medicine (PCCCM) in the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine (ACCM), effective March 1, 2025.

We are indebted to PCCCM Division Chief and BTT HC Co-Director Dr. Jamie McElrath Schwartz, who has devoted 16 years of her professional career to Johns Hopkins. Over the last five years as Division Chief of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine, Dr. Schwartz has led amazing innovation and growth in both the Pediatric Cardiac ICU (PCICU) and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). Dr. Schwartz’s leadership has been instrumental in the growth of the pediatric cardiac anesthesiology program, and she has been at the core of program building to bring the highest quality medical and surgical cardiac care to children in the region. She has mentored countless trainees and junior faculty who have pursued careers here and nationally in pediatric critical care, cardiac critical care, cardiology, general anesthesiology and cardiac anesthesiology. A quadruple board-certified pediatric cardiac intensivist and anesthesiologist, Dr. Schwartz was inducted in 2022 to the prestigious Miller-Coulson Academy of Clinical Excellence. In addition to her leadership here at Johns Hopkins, she has strongly represented us nationally on the Society of Pediatric Anesthesia (SPA) Board of Directors, the SPA Women’s Empowerment and Leadership Initiative, as well as the Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Society and the Congenital Cardiac Anesthesia Society (CCAS). Her exceptional mentorship, teaching, clinical excellence, and presence will be greatly missed, and we wish her all the best for her next phase.

Dr. Goswami is an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine (JHUSOM). He received his B.A. from the University of Virginia and M.D. from Eastern Virginia Medical School, followed by a pediatric residency at Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital. He arrived at Johns Hopkins in 2009 for a fellowship in pediatric critical care medicine, followed by a residency in anesthesiology. In 2014, Dr. Goswami moved to Houston to pursue fellowships in both pediatric anesthesiology and pediatric cardiac anesthesiology along with advanced training in pediatric cardiac critical care at the Texas Children’s Hospital/Baylor College of Medicine. We were thrilled to recruit him back to JHUSOM and ACCM in 2016 to begin his faculty career as a pediatric cardiac intensivist and anesthesiologist.

Over the last nine years, Dr. Goswami has established himself as an exceptional and highly respected clinician, leader and program builder. In 2018 he was appointed as the Director of the Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesia Program and Associate Director of the ECMO Program, and he has served as the Director of the Pediatric Ventricular Assist Device Program since 2019. Dr. Goswami has served on the Governing Board of the BTT HC since 2020. In addition to his outstanding skills as a clinician, educator and program builder, Dr. Goswami has published his original research work in high impact journals focused on blood management in pediatric cardiac surgery and holds leadership roles nationally including the CCAS Research Committee. He is the site principal investigator for the DoD funded CHIlled Platelet Study (CHIPS), a clinical trial evaluating chilled versus regularly stored platelets in patients undergoing pediatric cardiac surgery.

Dr. Goswami’s commitment and passion for system innovation are remarkable. He is a talented team builder who collaborates with interprofessional teams seamlessly to move clinical care forward with a focus on quality, safety, and efficiency. In his role as Division Chief of PCCCM, Dr. Goswami will partner closely with Dr. Gregory Yurasek, the incoming PCICU Medical Director, and interprofessional leaders across JHCC and BTT HC to continue to grow and innovate our programs to benefit children with cardiac disease.

Please join us in thanking Dr. Schwartz and congratulating Dr. Goswami for assuming this important role in ACCM, JHCC and the BTTHC.
