Grants Received

Sung-Min Cho, DO, MHS, received a grant from Gilead for a study titled Long-term impAct in inTEnsive caRe survivors of CORonavirus Disease-19 (The AFTERCOR Study). It is a multicenter study with two sites in the US (Johns Hopkins and UT Houston) that will enroll patients for 2 years. The goal is to examine neurological and pulmonological outcomes of patients admitted to the ICU with COVID-19.

Accomplishments and Honors

Jake Abernathy, MD, MPH, was chosen to serve as the Interim Executive Vice Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine.

Kelly Cole, CRNP, and Carla Hoeck, CRNP, just completed post-graduate course work for the Pediatric Acute Care certification, and are now board certified in both Primary and Acute Care Pediatrics.

Desiree Coutinho, MD, has been selected as the Department’s resident winner of the Frank L. Coulson, Jr. Award for Clinical Excellence. The Miller Coulson Academy for Clinical Excellence bestows this award annually to the resident in each program who exemplifies clinical excellence. The award acknowledges mastery and exemplary behavior in six pillars of clinical practice.

Nick Dalesio, MD, MPH, was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine, with a secondary appointment in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.

Katherine Hoops, MD, MPH, received a joint appointment in the Bloomberg School of Public Health Department of Health Policy and Management. She also gave Pediatrics grand rounds at MedStar Georgetown entitled “Firearm Injury Prevention and Policy for Clinicians.”

Sapna Kudchadkar, MD, PhD, was appointed Senior Associate Editor of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine.

Sapna Kudchadkar, MD, PhD, presented two talks at the 50^th SCCM Congress: “Choosing Wisely in Critical Care: How to Succeed in Implementing Less Is More- Early Mobilization” and “Evidence and Research: Navigating Dissemination Then and Now, During a Pandemic.”

Jessica LaRosa, MD, was awarded a Silver Snapshot Award for her SCCM Abstract, “Safety Events During Mobilization of Critically Ill Children in the United States.” ACCM co-authors included Ronke Awojoodu, MPH, RN and Sapna Kudchadkar, MD, PhD

Anisha Nadkarni, MD, presented her research abstract at the SCCM Congress. It was titled “Using Qualitative Feedback to Inform Best Practices for Teamwork During Intubations in the PICU.” ACCM co-authors included Madeleine Alvin and Sapna Kudchadkar, MD, PhD.

Caitlin O’Brien, MD, MPH, was elected as a Society of Pediatric Research Member.

Srinivasa Raja, MD, has been appointed as the Chair of the Educational Programs Working Group for the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP). This working group will serve as the scientific program committee that will help plan, direct, and supervise the scientific curriculum of the various virtual and in-person educational activities of the IASP.

Tammy Snyder, MPH, was elected to the board of the Ronald McDonald House of Baltimore.

Jochen Steppan, MD, DESA, FAHA, joined the editorial board of Frontiers in Physiology as a guest associate editor in vascular physiology.

M-Irfan Suleman, MD, gave an invited talk, titled “Beyond Opioids, Chronic Pain Management in Children and Adolescents,” at a Johns Hopkins Hospital GI Conference on January 13.

Liz Tucker, MD, was elected as a Society of Pediatric Research Member and was honored with its New Member Outstanding Science Award. This award recognizes a new member who has contributed to high-quality scientific research and who continues to demonstrate meaningful contributions in the pediatric academic field. Dr. Tucker’s research focuses on tuberculous meningitis, the most severe form of extrapulmonary TB, which disproportionately affects young children.

Jed Wolpaw, MD, MEd, will give a talk called “The ins and outs of IV Induction Agents” to the Universidad El Bosque Colombian School of Medicine Anesthesiology Interest Group on February 10. Then, on February 26, he will give one of the keynote talks at the International Whistler Anesthesia Summit called “Adult Learning in the 21st Century: Effective Teaching and Feedback Strategies in Resident Education”.
