GRANTS RECEIVED

Sung-Min Cho, DO, MHS, and Glenn Whitman, MD, were awarded an R21 grant from NINDS for their project entitled “Assessing Acute Brain Injury after Rapid Reduction of PaCO2 upon ECMO Cannulation Using Portable MRI and Biomarkers – DELTA ECMO ABI Study”.

Sung-Min Cho, DO, MHS, and Steven Keller, MD, PhD, were awarded a grant from DARPA GOLDEVAC for their project entitled “Innovative Resuscitation and Optimized Novel Multi-organ support with Autonomous ECMO for Non-medical personnel and medics: IRON MAN”.

Nick Dalesio, MD, MPH, and team were awarded a Living Lab Sustainability Project Grant for “Implementation of Airway Equipment Recycling Program in Operating Rooms”. These funds will facilitate implementation of laryngoscope recycling in Z3 and Weinberg ORs, building on the successful pilot on Z4. Xiaoning Han, MD, PhD, received a Transformational Project Award from the American Heart Association for the proposal “Engineered iPSCs-Derived Exosomes as an Effective Microglia/Macrophage-targeted Therapy for Intracerebral Hemorrhage”.

Awards

Andy Benson, DNP, CRNA, FAANA, FAAN, was inducted as a Fellow in the AANA in San Diego during the Annual Congress meeting in August. The Fellow designation (FAANA) is earned as a major career achievement that indicates a commitment to excellence in the profession of nurse anesthesia, demonstrating impactful contributions in clinical practice, education, research, and/or professional advocacy.

Travis Brady, a PhD student in the Santhanam laboratory, was awarded the Porter Physiology Fellowship by the American Physiological Society.

Paul J. Christo, MD, MBA, was inducted into the Miller Coulson Academy of Clinical Excellence.

Anita Gupta, DO, PharmD, MPP, was awarded Person of the Year for public service in her appointment as NYC Chief Surgeon.

Amanda Bettine Levin, MD, was inducted into the Miller Coulson Academy of Clinical Excellence.

Elizabeth Tucker, MD, was elected into the Fellowship in the American College of Critical Care Medicine (FCCM) for 2025. The American College of Critical Care Medicine (ACCM) is an honorary organization within the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) that recognizes SCCM members whose achievements and contributions demonstrate personal commitment to critical care excellence. Acceptance is based on achievements in fostering the ideals of critical care through program development, scholarly activities, and engagement and leadership in local, regional, and national critical care related organizations including the SCCM. The induction will be celebrated at the Annual 2025 SCCM Congress in Orlando.

Jake Abernathy, MD, MPH, has been appointed as the Vice-Chair for Strategy for ACCM.

Mary Beth Brady, MD, FASE, was appointed to the American Society of Echocardiography’s Echo Lab Directors Leadership Forum. She will serve for 1 year as the Perioperative Representative this forum.

Steve Frank, MD, was appointed to the Medical Advisory Council of the American Red Cross for a 2-year term.

Kellie M. Jaremko, MD, PhD, has been appointed to a 2-year term as a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) Committee on Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain Medicine.

Corina Noje, MD, was nominated Associate Regional Pediatric Medical Director for Region III of Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems (MIEMSS).

Aoibhinn ‘Aveen’ Nyhan, MD, is joining ACCM as an Assistant Professor in the Division of Pediatric Anesthesiology.

Other Accomplishments and Honors

Mary Beth Brady, MD, FASE, and Megan Kostibas, MD, served as faculty at the Society for Thoracic Surgeons Boot Camp held in Chicago, Il. Drs Brady and Kostibas taught intraoperative TEE to CT surgical trainees. They were one of the very few non-surgical teams to be invited as faculty.

The recent paper by Steve Frank, MD, and Nadia Hensley, MD, titled “A propensity-matched cohort study of intravenous iron versus red cell transfusions for preoperative iron-deficiency anemia” was featured in the Association for Advancement of Blood and Biotherapeutics (AABB) Weekly Report.

Steve Frank, MD, presented a recent paper to a journal club for the America’s Blood Centers (ABC)—an alliance of over 600 blood collection sites that collect and distribute 60% of blood in the US to hospitals. The paper is titled “Clinical outcomes, blood utilization, and ethical considerations for pediatric patients in a bloodless medicine and surgery program” and was chosen as the journal club article of the month.

Mohamed Rehman, MD, FAAP, and the ACCM family at All Children’s Hospital got together at their local soccer team stadium. They had a fantastic time cheering for the Rowdies!

Katherine Hoops, MD, testified on Capitol Hill on July 29 to the House Oversight Committee on gun violence prevention as a major public health issue.
