Goals

The Johns Hopkins Core Anesthesiology residency program is committed to cultivating and sustaining an environment that fosters the development of physician leaders who are committed to eliminating the nation’s health inequities through patient care, education, advocacy, and research. Diversity, health equity, and inclusion are core values of our residency program, the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine, and the School of Medicine. We are thrilled to welcome students who are committed to addressing health care disparities to apply for the Advanced Elective in Anesthesiology.

In addition to the exceptional clinical exposure, this program will offer structured mentorship and opportunities to engage with DEI initiatives within the department and institution. Students will meet with Dr. Michael Banks, Vice -Chair of DEI for ACCM, and Dr. Lori-Ann Edwards, Assistant Program Director, to discuss expectations and explore opportunities to participate in upcoming DEI related activities within the department and across the institution. Also, during their rotation, they will meet with Dr. Marquita Genies, Assistant Dean for Graduate Medical Education- Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and connect with other trainees throughout the institution.

Eligibility Requirements

All students applying for the sponsorship must meet the following criteria:

  1. Senior medical student in good standing at an accredited LCME (Liaison Committee on Medical Education) accredited medical schools
  2. Eligible for acceptance into the Johns Hopkins Advanced Clerkship in Anesthesiology (satisfactory completion of introductory anesthesiology rotation)
    a. Please note that due to the level of autonomy and responsibility afforded to our advanced clerkship students, we require that students have already completed a prior clerkship in anesthesiology.
    b. We understand that some students may not have completed a clerkship at the time of application, and we are happy to offer provisional acceptance to the program pending the satisfactory completion of this pre-requisite.
    c. Students should not be discouraged from applying based on this requirement.
  3. Applying for residency in Anesthesiology
  4. Demonstrated commitment to diversity, health equity, and inclusion in medicine as evidenced through leadership activities, community engagement, advocacy, scholarship, or other activities
  5. Completion of initial application (Johns Hopkins VISMED and Sponsorship Application)
  6. Elective must be during the months of August – October.

*Applicants from backgrounds underrepresented in medicine are encouraged to apply!
According to the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC)“underrepresented in medicine means those racial and ethnic populations that are underrepresented in the medical profession relative to their numbers in the general population.”

Sponsorship Details

We will offer $2500 to sponsor two qualified students per academic year. This will serve to defray costs of housing and transportation. If the student does not require housing, then the stipend will be $1000.
