RESEARCH DAY VISITING PROFESSOR & KEYNOTE SPEAKER

“AI in Critical Care: the Potential for Enhancing Patient Safety and Outcomes”

Gari D. Clifford, DPhil, FIEEE

Chair & Professor, Department of Biomedical Informatics, Emory University School of Medicine Professor, Department of Biomedical Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology Originally trained in theoretical physics, Dr. Clifford’s research focuses on the application of signal processing, machine learning, and physiological modeling to low-cost sensors to classify, track, and predict health and illness. In 2023, he was elected a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers for his work in AI in Cardiology. He is also well known for his work in critical care (particularly for managing the construction and deployment of the MIMIC II database) and for translational research in fetal monitoring. Dr. Clifford has spent much of the last decade developing programs focused on mental health and neurological diseases. While on faculty at the University of Oxford, he co-founded the Sleep and Circadian Neuroscience Institute, focusing on sleep and mental health. He also founded the Center for Affordable Healthcare Technology there, which led to the Co-Design Lab For Health Equity and Safe+Natal, both now run out of Emory. Through these initiatives, he is committed to addressing health equity and developing sustainable solutions to healthcare problems in resource-poor locations, with much of his work focused in Central America. Dr. Clifford is also a champion of Open Access data and Open Source software, particularly through his leadership of the PhysioNet/CinC Challenges and contributions to the PhysioNet Resource over the last two decades.
