GRANTS

Susanne Muehlschlegel, MD, MPH, FNCS, FCCM, FAAN, was awarded a 2-year grant by The Trustees of The Patrick and Catherine Weldon Donaghue Medical Research Foundation for support of her research on “Impact of a shared decision-making intervention for families of severe acute brain injury patients”, starting January 1, 2025.

Awards

Pete Lax, MB ChB (Hons.), Dip SML, Dip RTM RCSEd, FIMC, FRCA, FFICM, was awarded the Lady Cade Medal by the Royal College of Surgeons and the RAF. The Lady Cade Medal is awarded to a Medical Officer who has made a significant advance to the practice of medicine. His years of dedication to Trama Care, culminating in the publication of The Textbook of Acute Trauma Care is an outstanding example of this advance and benefits the RAF Medical Branch and beyond.

Promotions and Appointments

Mary Beth Brady, MD, FASE, was appointed to the American Society of Anesthesiologists Committee on Annual Meeting Oversight (AMOC). This committee oversees the planning and execution of the ASA annual meeting. Dr. Brady also accepted the role of Chair for the Educational Track Subcommittee on Cardiac Anesthesia.

Tony Sochet, MD, MSc, was promoted to Associate Professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine.

Robert Thomsen, MD, is the Vice Chair of the Board of Directors of the Anesthesia Quality Institute (AQI), the primary source of information for quality improvement in the clinical practice of anesthesiology. The Anesthesia Quality Institute is a federally-listed patient safety organization and administers the Anesthesia Incident Reporting System (AIRS), the first specialty specific incident reporting system in the United States; the National Anesthesia Clinical Outcomes Registry (NACOR), a CMS Qualified Clinical Data Registry (QCDR); and the Anesthesia Closed Claims Program, a repository of 30 years of closed malpractice claims used to identify major anesthesia-related safety concerns, patterns of injury, and prevention strategies.

Michael C. Banks, MD, MEHP, was invited to serve as a question author for the Critical Care Medicine Examination committee for the ABA. His term is 2 years starting on January 1, 2025.

Mary Beth Brady, MD, FASE, presented at the European Association of Cardiothoracic Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care (EACTAIC) meeting in Freiburg, Germany. She addressed “New Trends in Interventional Procedures.” She also created and co-moderated a joint session of the SCA and the EACTAIC on “North American and European Practices: Dilemmas, Debated and Discussion”. Additionally, Dr. Brady presented at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions in Chicago, Il: “Perfecting Precision: Enhancing Intraprocedural Outcomes in TEER via Imaging”.

Nadia Hensley, MD, was honored to speak at the ASA Annual Meeting in a pro-con debate entitled “Factor Concentrates as First Line Agents” on Tuesday October 22. Dr. Hensley also spoke on a panel discussion on October 22 entitled “Clopidogrel Today, CABG today, OK? How do we best manage cardiac surgical patients who have had recent P2Y12 inhibitors for urgent surgery?”

Katie O’Conor, MD, MBA, was the invited speaker at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center Pediatric Trauma PI & M&M Conference in November, presenting on “Trauma-Informed Care for Pediatric Trauma Clinicians”.

Vishank Shah, MD, gave invited talks at the 22nd Annual Neurocritical Care Society Meeting in San Diego titled “Bridging Gaps in Neurocritical Care in South Asia: Challenges and Solutions” and “Is It Time for Personalized Blood Pressure Management in Subarachnoid Hemorrhage”. Dr. Shah was the invited keynote speaker at the 18th Oregon Stroke Conference and gave 2 talks: “Guideline Update on Management of Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage” and “Long-Term Recovery Trajectories in Intracerebral Hemorrhage”. Additionally, Dr. Shah was an invited speaker in Mumbai, India for a joint session hosted by Sir H.N. Reliance Foundation Hospital and the Society of Neurocritical Care (SNCC) giving a talk on “Cerebral Autoregulation-Oriented Therapy at the Bedside: Personalizing Care in the Neurocritical Care Unit”.

Nicola Heller, PhD, was celebrated at her farewell party on November 14. She will be missed, and ACCM wishes her the best in her new role as Associate Director of Flow Cytometry at AstraZeneca.
