Please join us in congratulating Katherine Hoops, MD, MPH for her promotion to Associate Professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Hoops has a joint appointment in the Department of Health Policy in the Bloomberg School of Public Health and is a nationally recognized leader in gun violence and injury prevention. She is an accomplished researcher, educator, and clinician who has devoted herself with unwavering passion and purpose.

Dr. Hoops earned her medical degree at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in Miami, Florida. During this time, she also completed a Master’s in Public Health with a concentration in health policy at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She completed her residency training in Pediatrics at the University of Alabama Birmingham before coming to Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine to complete her Pediatric Critical Care Medicine fellowship. Driven by her long-term goal of providing direct legal services to address the needs of patients and their families, Dr. Hoops has committed to rigorous training in law, legal scholarship, and policy. She is currently a Juris Doctor candidate at the Georgetown University Law Center (2025) and, upon graduation, will be one
of only a handful of intensivist MD/JD-trained faculty in the country.

Dr. Hoops’ research is focused on a public health approach to the prevention of firearm injury and violence. She researches creating effective policy measures, implementing a trauma-informed approach to care, effectively communicating with patients and families about firearm safety, and improving physicians’ education on and counseling related to firearm safety. Katie has become an exemplary figure and source of immense pride for her Division, Department, and Institution. We are truly thrilled to share this well-deserved achievement.
