Yun Guan, MD, PhD and Zhaozhu Qiu, PhD were awarded a NINDS / HEAL Initiative R01 grant for the project “Validation of a new large-pore channel as a novel target for neuropathic pain.”
Katherine Hoops, MD, MPH, (JD candidate) was awarded a 5-year R01 from NIMHD for a project entitled “ACTFAST: Urban and Rural Trauma Centers RE-AIM at Gun Safety.” This study will test the effectiveness of a comprehensive training strategy, ACTFAST (Adopting Comprehensive Training for FireArm Safety in Trauma centers), for improving the implementation of a firearm injury prevention effort aimed at increasing protective factors and reducing future firearm injury and death. Findings from this study, conducted at major regional trauma centers through Johns Hopkins Medicine and the Johns Hopkins Clinical Research Network, will help to establish best practices for delivering firearm injury prevention screening and counseling to injured adults in the inpatient setting. She is joined on this award by several co-investigators at Johns Hopkins including Dr. Cassandra Crifasi (SPH), Dr. Michelle Patch (SON), Dr. Madhu Subramanian (DOS), and Dr. Joseph Sakran (DOS).
Jeeun Kang, PhD and Laeben Lester, MD were awarded a 3-year, $1.1MM, NIH R61/R33 grant for the project “5T-IV: photoacoustic needle with beacon pulse for ultrasound guided vascular access with Tool-Tip Tracking and Tissue Typing” as MPIs.

Mary Beth Brady, MD FASE served as faculty for the Society of Thoracic Surgeons Boot Camp, a state-of-the-art experiential foundation and hands-on practice in basic cardiothoracic operating skills for cardiothoracic trainees. Dr. Brady was 1 of 2 anesthesiologists to partake in this Boot Camp. The topic was “Intraoperative Transesophageal Echocardiography.”
Laura Chin, MD, MPH presented “Local anesthetic adjuvants and admixtures- helpful or hurtful? Discussing the rationale for using adjuncts and reviewing data describing efficacy, side effects and clinical considerations for use with placement of peripheral nerve blocks” at Grand Rounds at Mercy Hospital, Baltimore.
Nicholas M. Dalesio, MD, MPH was inducted into the Miller-Coulson Academy of Clinical Excellence.
Steve Frank, MD presented Grand Rounds on “Evidence-based Transfusion Practice and Blood Management Program” at the University of Michigan Department of Anesthesiology in Ann Arbor, MI.
Steve Frank, MD and team were re-certified at the highest level (Level 1) by the Joint Commission with no citations, for the patient blood management program. There are only 10 hospitals in the country that have this designation.
Steve Frank, MD was recognized by the American Society of Anesthesiologists, in advance of the Annual Meeting, for his notable abstract, “Greater than 7-fold Return on Investment for a Comprehensive Patient Blood Management Program with Equivalent or Improved Outcomes” which was designated for the Best of Abstracts: Clinical Science section and an ASA press release. Tina Harris (PSC IV, CPO Team) received the Edward A. Halle Prize for Excellence in Patient Service. The annual Edward A. Halle Prize for Excellence in Patient Service honors an employee who exemplifies extraordinary human compassion and outstanding patient service. The award was established in 1993 in honor of the late Edward Halle, who provided excellent service during his Johns Hopkins career. The recipient of the award is selected based on complimentary letters sent by patients throughout the year and receives a certificate signed by Johns Hopkins Medicine leadership and a $500 check. The prize is also announced during the Service Awards ceremony.
Johns Hopkins Children’s Center Unplanned Extubation Group was recognized by Children’s Hospitals’ Solutions for Patient Safety (SPS), a national pediatric safety collaborative, as a top performing hospital for this hospital-acquired condition. They will receive recognition in the SPS Sharing Hospitals’ Innovations for Network Engagement report as an example of learning from excellence. ACCM faculty currently involved in the initiative, and as founding members of the work, include Meghan Bernier, MD,Rahul Koka, MD, MPH, Jamie Schwartz, MD, David Stockwell, MD, MBA; fellows currently involved include Camille Anderson, MD and Mel Golden, DO.

Alicsha McNeil-Greene (CCT Team) received the Baker-King Award. The Baker-King Awards are annually presented to employees who demonstrate truly outstanding job performance and act as positive role models, thus setting an example for everyone at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and Health System Corporation. The Baker-King Award was created in 1962 by Dr. and Mrs. Theodore King, who recognized the significant contributions of all Hospital employees. Mrs. King, whose maiden name was Baker, believed it was important to acknowledge non-supervisory staff. Baker-King honorees are nominated by their managers and supervisors. The Baker-King Foundation established a fund to recognize employees in any non-exempt position within JHH, JHHSC, JHCP and JHHP. The awards are presented during the annual Employee Appreciation Service Awards to employees who have been truly outstanding in the performance of their duties, and who have thus set an example for all. Each recipient receives a $100 bonus (via payroll), a Baker-King pin, and a certificate signed by Johns Hopkins Medicine leadership.
