Grants Received

Jeffrey Bolstridge, DO (mentored by Melania Bembea) was awarded a Johns Hopkins Pediatric Innovation Grant for the project “Use of whole blood to prime extracorporeal membrane oxygenation circuits: an in-vitro pilot study.” The Pediatric Innovation Grant supplements an Extracorporeal Life Support Organization Grant awarded in January 2023 to establish the in vitro model.

Mela Bembea, MD, PhD, MPH was awarded a Johns Hopkins Pediatric Innovation Grant for the project “Use of whole blood to prime extracorporeal membrane oxygenation circuits: an in-vitro pilot study.”

Dennis Delany, MD and team were awarded a Johns Hopkins Pediatric Innovation Grant for the project “Advancing HOPES with Comprehensive Resuscitation and Transfer Bed for High-Risk Deliveries.”

Christopher Donohue, MD and team were awarded a Johns Hopkins Pediatric Innovation Grant for the project “Sustained Inflation During CPR: Impact on Global and Regional Cerebral Blood Flow in a Pediatric Porcine Model.”

Qun Li, MD, PhD was awarded a Blaustein Pain Research Fund Award for the project “Effect of early general anesthetic exposure on susceptibility to chronic pain and sensitization of pain.”

Caitlin O’Brien, MD, MPH was awarded a Johns Hopkins Clinician Scientist Award for her research proposal titled ”Development of physiologic feedback-guided resuscitation algorithms to improve outcomes in a pediatric swine model.”

Courtney Robertson, MD was awarded an R13 Conference grant from the NINDS to support the 2023 National Neurotrauma Symposium, along with Kimberly Byrnes, PhD (USUHS) as Co-PI.

 

Accomplishments and Honors

ACCM would like to congratulate the Class of 2023 Anesthesia Technology students (Malia Goodwin, Christie Weche, Damisi Kayode, and Serge Ndalamba) who graduated with Associate of Applied Science Degrees in Anesthesia Technology and are on the road to national certification as anesthesia technologists. Peju Adekoya, MD was named a Top Doc in Pain Medicine by Bethesda Magazine in the July-August 2023 issue.

Paola Aranda, MD, a pediatric anesthesiology fellow, received the Mark Rossberg Fellow Teaching Award and will join our Johns Hopkins Division of Pediatric Anesthesiology in August.

Deondra Asike, MD was appointed by Governor Wes Moore to serve on the Maryland Cannabis Public Health Advisory Council.

Jim Beal, DO, a PCCM fellow, received the Ivor Berkowitz Excellence in Education Award.

David Berman, MD was elected Secretary of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Faculty Senate.

Mary Beth Brady, MD FASE presented “Interventional Echocardiography: Building a New Subspecialty” at the American Society of Echocardiography Scientific Sessions in Washington, DC.

Phil Carullo, MD received the Ivor Berkowitz REACH Award (Role Model for Education, Advocacy & Clinical Excellence in Healthcare) at the Pediatric Anesthesiology Fellowship Graduation.

Sung Min Cho, DO, MHS has been promoted to Associate Professor in ACCM.

Ifeoma Ekwere, MD formerly an associate professor of anesthesiology at the University of Benin City Teaching Hospital in Benin City, Nigeria has officially joined the department as a project director for the Society of Critical Care Medicine project that is being led by the ACCM’s Global Alliance of Perioperative Professionals (JH-GAPP)  https://anesthesiology.hopkinsmedicine.org/gapp. Dr. Ekwere can be reached at [email protected] for those interested in global perioperative care, access to oxygen, access to renewable energy or global health education.

Anita Gupta, DO MPP PharmD FASA was appointed to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation as a Steering Committee Member and member on the Innovation Committee at the Innovation Equity Forum held at the National Institutes of Health. (Picture below).

Adam Laytin, MD, MPH moderated a session on “How to Prevent an ICU Admission” and presented invited lectures on “PEEP Titration and Lung Recruitment Maneuvers in ARDS” and “Emergency and Critical Care Medicine Research in Low Resource Settings: Landmark Studies That Do It Right” at the International Conference on Emergency Medicine.

Adam Laytin, MD, MPH was selected to be a faculty advisor for the JHU SOM Public Health/Global Health Scholarly Concentration.

Katie O’Conor, MD was a co-author on the presentation “Scaling through Partnership and Education: A Model to Expand Access to Forensic Evaluations” at the 2023 North American Refugee Health Conference in Calgary, Canada.

Courtney Robertson, MD served as the Program Chair for the National Neurotrauma Society Symposium (40th Annual Meeting) held in Austin, Texas in June, which hosted a record number of registrants (828), presented 427 posters, and awarded >30 travel awards for trainees to attend the meeting.

Courtney Robertson, MD was elected to serve on the National Neurotrauma Society Council from 2023-2025.

John B. Sampson, MD has been made the founding director of the Society of Critical Care Medicine’s African Infrastructure Relief & Support program (SCCM AIRS). This program exists within the JH-GAPP group of ACCM. The project is a $5.5 million infrastructure development (not research) project to develop oxygen, renewable energy and critical care medicine infrastructure in key African medical centers through collaboration with health systems in The Gambia, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Ghana.
