In recognition of their contributions to the field, Drs. Deborah Schwengel, MD MEHP joined a team of Hopkins nurses and Hopkins-trained surgeons to perform bladder exstrophy closures in Kampala, Uganda in February 2023. Care was provided for ten patients ranging in age from 2 months to 23 years. Bedside instruction was provided on tunneled epidural placement and maintenance, and postoperative care. In addition, a workshop with formal talks was provided over several days and included Dr. Schwengel’s two presentations entitled: “Anesthetic Considerations for Repair of Classic Bladder Exstrophy” and “Epidural Catheter Placement and Management in Classic Bladder Exstrophy: It’s Complicated.”
