Accomplishments and Honors

Eleanor Bennett-Gabralla, RT and Michael Banks, MD, MEHP and the ACCM DEI Council coordinated with the P-Tech Program to host 16 students from Paul Laurence Dunbar High School to observe SIM education on College Days March 2^nd and March 16^th. The students observed ACCM residents and Halsted surgery residents participate in a combined simulation demonstrating how important communication is for safe and effective treatment of critically ill patients. Thank you to Christina Miller, MD, and Adam Schiavi, MD, PhD, MS who created a special video to introduce the students to the simulation and the scenario, as well as for making the participation possible.

Tina Doshi, MD, MHS was appointed to the Scientific Advisory Board for the Blaustein Pain Endowment for Pain Research and Education.

Katie O’Conor, MD and co-authors Adam Laytin, MD, MPH, Michael Banks, MD, MEHP, Lisa Young, BS, BA, Crisanto Torres, MD, and Serkan Toy, PhD presented “Developing a Health Equity Curriculum for Critical Care Fellows” at the Johns Hopkins Institute for Excellence in Education Conference and received First Place in Oral Presentations.

Katie O’Conor, MD was elected Co-Chair of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Faculty Diversity Council.

Melissa Pavelack, DO received an American Thoracic Society Abstract Scholarship to present her work “Disparities in the Health Effects of Climate Change and Pollutants” in the poster session of the ATS Assembly on Environmental, Occupational and Population Health (EOPH) at the 2023 ATS International Conference.

Courtney Robertson, MD was a Visiting Professor at the University of Texas at Austin, Dell Medical School and Dell Children’s Medical Center in January and presented the Department of Pediatrics Grand Rounds with a talk entitled “Sex Differences in Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury.”

Kate Rosenblatt, MD, MHS co-edited the March issue of Anesthesiology Clinics, titled “Current Topics in Critical Care for the Anesthesiologist,” with contributions from several Hopkins ACCM anesthesiologists (articles listed below).

Robert Stevens, MD received the Presidential Citation Award from the Society of Critical Care Medicine.

Grants Received

Adam Laytin, MD, MPH received a Society for Academic Emergency Medicine Foundation / Global Emergency Medicine Academy Research Pilot Grant for a project entitled “Developing a Context-Appropriate VAP Prevention Strategy in Ethiopia.”

Nicola Heller, PhD received a pilot grant from the Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Center, with co-investigator Franco D’Alessio, MD for the project “Investigating changes in monocyte-macrophage phenotype and inflammation in older frail adults.”

Jose Suarez, MD, FNCS, FANA, FAAN will be the Site PI and Tina Doshi, MD, MHS will be the Procedural Co-Investigator on a recently funded, $3.5M 12-site U01 with the University of Florida, “Pterygopalatine Fossa (PPF) Block as an Opioid Sparing Treatment for Acute Headache in Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage (BLOCK-SAH)”. This project will investigate the use of ultrasound-guided pterygopalatine fossa blocks for the management of headache due to subarachnoid hemorrhage.
