Grants Received

Austen Lefebvre, MD and Marek Mirski, MD, PhD have been awarded a $1.5M 2-yr project award from DoD DARPA for “Digital Optical Holography Technology for Non-Invasive Measurement of Intracranial Pressure (ICP)”. The research will be focused on developing and clinically validating in the NCCU a novel technology to measure intracranial pressure. To date, no investigated non-invasive technology has been developed meeting criteria for continuous, real-time, and quantitative measure of ICP, and this project they believe has such capability.

Qin Zheng, PhD was awarded a $150,000 Merkin Peripheral Neuropathy and Nerve Regeneration (PNNR) Center Seed Grant for a two-year funding period beginning 12/01/2022 to investigate “In vivo characterization of chemotherapy-induced neuropathy using large scale calcium imaging.”

Jake Abernathy, MD, MPH was a panelist on “Measuring Quality: A Subspecialty Perspective from Cardiac, Pediatric, and Neuroanesthesia” at the American Society of Anesthesiologists Annual Meeting in New Orleans in October.

Janet Adegboye, MD had two oral/poster presentations, “Overtransfusion Is Common In Patients Receiving Massive Transfusion” and “A Novel Algorithm to Calculate Target Preoperative Hemoglobin,” at the American Society of Anesthesiologists Annual Meeting in New Orleans in October.

Promise Ariyo, MD was a panelist on “Heart Failure – Curbside Consult With the Experts!” at the American Society of Anesthesiologists Annual Meeting in New Orleans in October. Dr. Ariyo and Laeben Lester presented “Cardiac Secrets for Non-Cardiac Providers – Practical Advice from the Experts” at the conference.

Pooja Bhatia, BSN, RN, CEN – mentored by Corina Noje, MD – won the Special Ground Air Medical qUality Transport Quality Improvement Award for “Implementation of consistent medical direction consults during pediatric critical care interhospital transport.”

Mary Beth Brady, MD FASE presented at the Association of Cardiac Anesthesiologists on the topic, “Interventional Echocardiography is the future of Cardiac Anesthesiology.”

Mary Beth Brady, MD FASE and Laeben Lester, MD were panelists on “Transcatheter Procedures for Beginners – The Echo Basics” at the American Society of Anesthesiologists Annual Meeting in New Orleans in October. Dr. Brady was also a panelist on “Transcatheter Mitral Repair Procedures – What Is It? And Why Should You Care?” at the conference.

Philip Carullo, MD was a panelist on “Evidence and Practical Updates in the Management of Pediatric Pain Medicine: An Expert Roundtable” at the American Society of Anesthesiologists Annual Meeting in New Orleans in October.

Brian Cho, MD presented “Transfusions and Patient Blood Management – Past, Present and Future” at Grand Rounds at Brigham and Women’s Hospital Department of Anesthesiology in October.

Sung-Min Cho, DO, MHS was an invited speaker at the Korea ECMO Symposium, presenting “Neuromonitoring and management of ECMO” in Seoul, South Korea.

Nabila Chowdhury, MD (PEM Fellow) – mentored by Corina Noje, MD – was awarded the Best In-Training Paper Award for her work – ‘More than words: language patterns indicative of unrecognized shock in children undergoing interhospital transfer’ – at the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Transport Medicine Scientific Session.

Tina Doshi, MD, MHS, was a panelist on “Finding Connections in Chronic Pain: A Preview of ASRA Pain Medicine in 2022” and “Rethinking the Use of Steroids for Interventional Pain Procedures” and presented “The Future is Now: Innovation Therapies for Patients Who Suffer from Long-term Pain” at the American Society of Anesthesiologists Annual Meeting in New Orleans in October.

Steve Frank, MD gave a talk in Sioux Falls, South Dakota that was webcast to Fargo and Bismarck (North Dakota) titled “Perioperative Viscoelastic Testing”.

Nadia Hensley, MD presented “Perioperative Hemostasis Controversies in High-Risk Cardiac Surgery Patients” and “Cases, Cases…Nothing but Cases: Lessons Learned from the Clinical Arena” at the American Society of Anesthesiologists Annual Meeting in New Orleans in October.

Megan Kostibas, MD co-edited the December issue of Anesthesiology Clinics, titled “Vascular Anesthesia,” with contributions from several Hopkins ACCM anesthesiologists (articles listed below).

Adam Laytin, MD, MPH was an invited content expert for the WHO Sepsis Learning Program Pilot in Lyon, October 26-27.

Adam Laytin, MD, MPH was a visiting lecturer at the St. Paul Hospital Millennium Medical College in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from October 31 to November 4, and delivered four lectures on respiratory failure, mechanical ventilation, and ARDS.

Laeben Lester, MD was a panelist on the Clinical Forum “Sedation for High-risk Cardiac Patients – When Anesthesia is the Riskiest Part of the Procedure” at the American Society of Anesthesiologists Annual Meeting in New Orleans in October.  

Corina Noje, MD, Philomena Costabile, BSN, RN (peds transport assistant nurse manager), Pooja Bhatia, BSN, RN, CEN (peds transport lead clinical nurse) and the rest of the JHH Peds transport team had a notable presence at the AAP NCE in Anaheim, CA in October 2022 and won three of the five awards given at the Section of Transport Medicine Scientific Session’s Award Ceremony.

Robert Chambliss, MD, Best Paper Award.

Corina Noje, MD and Philomena Costabile, BSN, RN were invited to lead the “Transport Resuscitation Scenarios Utilizing High Fidelity Simulation” at the first simulation workshop at the 2022 American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) National Conference & Exhibition, Course on Neonatal and Pediatric Critical Care Transport Medicine, Anaheim, CA.

Katie O’Conor, MD co-authored an abstract with Omeid Heidari, PhD, MPH, ANP-C, who presented their work, “COVID-19 vaccinations, infectious disease testing, and harm reduction for people who inject drugs: metrics from a novel Ending the HIV Epidemic initiative” at the American Public Health Association Annual Meeting in November.

Rashmi Prasad, MBBS led two workshops, “Hands on Ultrasound-Guided Regional Anesthesia and Analgesia for Breast Surgery” and “Hands on Ultrasound-Guided Regional Anesthesia Workshop for Rib Fractures,” at the American Society of Anesthesiologists Annual Meeting in New Orleans in October.

Kate Rosenblatt, MD, MHS led the workshop “Understanding the Changes to the ASA Difficult Airway Guidelines Including Emergency Invasive Airway Lab,” was a panelist on “All You Need to Know About the 2022 ASA Difficult Airway Management Practice Guidelines,” and presented “Facts and Myths About Fascial Plane Blocks” and “Time is Brain: Extinguishing Neurologic Emergencies in the Operating Rooms” at the American Society of Anesthesiologists Annual Meeting in New Orleans in October.

Jochen Steppan, MD presented “The latest insights into the perioperative management for patients with pulmonary hypertension” and “Patient with left ventricular assist device presenting for surveillance EGD/colonoscopy” at the American Society of Anesthesiology Annual Meeting in New Orleans in October. Dr. Steppan also moderated the session “Pulmonary Hypertension Master Class” at the meeting.

M-Irfan Suleman, MBBS was Invited Faculty, leading the sessions, “Setting up a Pediatric Regional Anesthesia Service: a Blueprint for Success” and “Ultrasound Guided Interventional Techniques in Pediatric Chronic Pain Management,” at the American Society of Anesthesiologists Annual Meeting in New Orleans in October.

Oleg Turkot, MD hosted two esteemed Ukrainian anesthesiologists to visit our department for two weeks – Serhii Dubrov, MD, Professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine, President of the Ukrainian Society of Anesthesiology and Nataliya Matolinets, MD, Professor and Chair of Anesthesiology at the Territorial Medical Union in Lviv. With leadership from Dr. Turkot and a big thank you to Aliaksei Pustavoitau, MD, our guests learned about Hopkins ACCM best practices / “behind the scenes,” including difficult airway/DART, trauma resuscitation/ACLS, blood product utilization, transport and command center operations, and algorithms and cognitive aids. This has already resulted in the creation and deployment of a standard antibiotic dosing protocol at the Territorial Medical Union in Lviv (3000 bed hospital) and collaboration with the Ukraine Ministry of Health to update ACLS guidelines nationally.
