Austen Lefebvre, MD and Marek Mirski, MD, PhD have been awarded a $1.5M 2-yr project award from DoD DARPA for “Digital Optical Holography Technology for Non-Invasive Measurement of Intracranial Pressure (ICP)”. The research will be focused on developing and clinically validating in the NCCU a novel technology to measure intracranial pressure. To date, no investigated non-invasive technology has been developed meeting criteria for continuous, real-time, and quantitative measure of ICP, and this project they believe has such capability.
Qin Zheng, PhD was awarded a $150,000 Merkin Peripheral Neuropathy and Nerve Regeneration (PNNR) Center Seed Grant for a two-year funding period beginning 12/01/2022 to investigate “In vivo characterization of chemotherapy-induced neuropathy using large scale calcium imaging.”

Pooja Bhatia, BSN, RN, CEN – mentored by Corina Noje, MD – won the Special Ground Air Medical qUality Transport Quality Improvement Award for “Implementation of consistent medical direction consults during pediatric critical care interhospital transport.”

Oleg Turkot, MD hosted two esteemed Ukrainian anesthesiologists to visit our department for two weeks – Serhii Dubrov, MD, Professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine, President of the Ukrainian Society of Anesthesiology and Nataliya Matolinets, MD, Professor and Chair of Anesthesiology at the Territorial Medical Union in Lviv. With leadership from Dr. Turkot and a big thank you to Aliaksei Pustavoitau, MD, our guests learned about Hopkins ACCM best practices / “behind the scenes,” including difficult airway/DART, trauma resuscitation/ACLS, blood product utilization, transport and command center operations, and algorithms and cognitive aids. This has already resulted in the creation and deployment of a standard antibiotic dosing protocol at the Territorial Medical Union in Lviv (3000 bed hospital) and collaboration with the Ukraine Ministry of Health to update ACLS guidelines nationally.
