Raymond Koehler, PhD was awarded a StAAR Investigator Award to study “Development of a Decision Algorithm for Photoacoustic Monitoring of the Fetus at Risk of Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy.”

Laeben Lester, MD was awarded a StAAR Transformative Award to study “Sonic IV: Photoacoustic needle with beacon pulse for ultrasound guided vascular access with tool tip tracking.”

Marek Mirski, MD PhD & Austen Lefebvre, MD have received a continuation award from the Defense Advanced Research Agency (DARPA) for their Brain-Computer-Interface Project, focused on non-invasive, wireless, real-time (<10msec lag time) acquisition of extremely restricted neuronal activity (<1mm3). The goal is to enable thought-induced rapid activation of external medical and defense-related devices. The award is for $420,000, above the initial phase $900,000 granted in 2019.

Sinead Nyhan, MD was awarded a StAAR Mentored Training Award to study “Pulmonary artery remodeling in patients with pulmonary hypertension.”

Paul Nyquist, MD MPH was awarded a $2.4M research grant from NINDS (1RF1NS128135-01) titled “Vascular Contributors to Blood Brain Barrier Permeability and Regional White Matter Hyperintensity Progression in Young Asymptomatic People” for the funding period 7/15/2022 – 4/30/2025.

Kathryn Rosenblatt, MD MHS was awarded a StAAR Investigator Award to study “Defining Cerebral Autoregulation-Guided Therapeutic Targets in Sepsis.”

Susanna Scafidi, MD was awarded a StAAR Investigator Award to study “Effect of intra-nasal HB-EGF treatment on brain glucose metabolism after traumatic brain injury in the developing brain.”

Robert Stevens, MD was awarded an NIH-sponsored grant from the Network for Investigation of Delirium: Unifying Scientists (NIDUS) for a project titled “An Artificial Intelligence System for Prediction and Detection of Intensive Care Delirium” (R33AG071744).

Brian Cho, MD presented “Transfusions and Patient Blood Management – The Past, Present and Future” at Grand Rounds at Emory University Hospital and University of Tennessee Health Science Center in July.

Sung-Min Cho, DO, MHS, was an invited speaker at the University of Texas: Houston Advanced Heart Failure Grand Rounds, “Neuroimaging and Acute Brain Injury in Patients with ECMO” in Houston.

Steve Cohen, MD was listed by ExpertScape as the #2 expert in the world for the general category of “Pain.”

Steve Frank, MD presented to the Health Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) on “Clinical Analytics to Improve Blood Utilization: The Johns Hopkins Experience”, which in part allowed the Hopkins Health System to achieve a Stage 7 EMRAM (Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model) certification.

Steve Frank, MD presented on an American Association for Blood and Biotherapeutics (AABB) webinar on “Bloodless Medicine: Advances and Alternatives When Blood is not an Option.”

Adam Laytin, MD MPH, Katie O’Conor, MD, Michael Banks, MD MEHP, Crisanto Torres MD, MPH, and Serkan Toy, PhD, were invited speakers at Stanford University School of Medicine, presenting the lecture “Developing a Health Equity Curriculum for Critical Care Fellows” in June.

Katie O’Conor, MD was reappointed to the Johns Hopkins University Police Accountability Board by the Maryland Senate.

Srinivasa Raja, MD was a Plenary Lecturer at the 8th Malaysian Association for the Study of Pain Biennial Scientific Meeting in July, presenting “Neuropathic Pain: The Search for the Elusive Holy Grail.”

Courtney Robertson, MD completed her term as President of the National Neurotrauma Society (NNS), by presiding over the NNS Symposium June 25-29 in Atlanta, GA. The Symposium was highly successful, with close to 800 registrants and 400 abstracts. She will now serve as Program Chair for the 2023 NNS Symposium in Austin, TX in June 2023.
