Grants Received

Phil Carullo, MD, was awarded a grant from the Office of Well-Being at Johns Hopkins Medicine to implement exercise and stretch break stations in the Pediatric Operating Room areas.

Accomplishments and Honors

Meghan Bernier, MD, was featured in an article published in Johns Hopkins Medicine News & Publications for her role in adapting the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center for the surge in pediatric COVID patients that occurred in December and January. Before the omicron variant emerged, the most inpatient pediatric patients with COVID had been only 8 to 10 at a time. That number swelled to 25 over the winter holidays. Dr. Bernier had worked with two others to make these plans in the summer of 2021 with hopes that they would not be needed. Yet, because of their advanced planning, they were able to act quickly. Now the Children’s Center has resumed its normal operations, but the team is ready if another surge develops. Read more here.

Mary Beth Brady, MD, delivered a presentation entitled “Presentation Skills – the Do’s, the Don’ts, and the Disasters” as part of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Office of Faculty Development. The audience included a wide range of JHU SOM faculty. Dr Brady will be presenting similar sessions at the upcoming IARS meeting as well as at the upcoming Society for Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists.

Sung-Min Cho, DO, was an invited speaker last month at the International Stroke Conference in New Orleans. He gave a talk titled “Neurological Complications in Patients with ECMO.” This month, he presented grand rounds at Stony Brook University on “ECMO-associated Stroke.”

Steve Frank, MD, gave grand rounds for the High Value Practice Academic Alliance.  The talk was titled “Taking Patient Blood Management Out of the Red Zone: Assessing Cost Savings for Platelet Transfusions.”

David Graham, PhD, was featured in the Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital (ACH) publication Newsroom for his efforts to develop an easier and more standardized method for collecting blood samples. As director of the ACH Molecular Determinants Core, he leads a multidisciplinary team that is researching ways to improve understanding of biological processes at the molecular level. He and his team are working to develop a method by which spots of blood are blotted and dried on filter paper for use in tests. Use of these dried blood samples (DBS) could replace the need for drawing large volumes of blood into tubes. Although the DBS method is not yet approved for clinical use, Dr. Graham and colleagues have been using it to evaluate normal levels of biomarkers in blood from newborns. Such biomarkers could one day be used to identify the presence or propensity for chronic conditions in infants. Read more here.

Marie Hanna, MD, MEHP, will co-lead the American Academy of Pain Medicine meeting this month. She will moderate two acute pain management sessions and chair the Abstract and Flash Talks committee.

The abstract by Katie MacMillan, MD, titled “Epidemiology and Clinical Characteristics of Fatal and Nonfatal Drowning Patients Presenting to a Mid-Atlantic Urban Pediatric Emergency Department from 2018 to 2020” was selected for a poster presentation at the upcoming Society for the Advancement of Violence and Injury Research (SAVIR) conference in March.

Carlie Myers, MD, a Pediatric Critical Care Fellow in ACCM, was honored with a Women’s History Month Achievers Award from Johns Hopkins Medicine.

Srinivasa Raja, MD, moderated the virtual workshop on “Advances in Clinical Science and Management” at the IASP Neuropathic Pain Special Interest Group (NeuPSIG) Workshop on February 21, 2022, which included speakers from Italy, Germany, and the U.S.

Hassan Rayaz, MD will chair the ultrasound workshop and give a talk titled “Pain Management Beyond the Block” at the American Academy of Pain Medicine meeting this month.

Kara Segna, MD, won “Best of Conference for Scientific Abstracts” for ASRA (American Society of Regional Anesthesia) with her abstract entitled, “IGF-1 Nanoparticles Improve Functional Outcomes After Peripheral Nerve Injury.” Additionally, she gave grand rounds at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore last week on “Peri-operative Care for the Transgender Patient.”

Jochen Steppan, MD, presented grand rounds at the Insel Spital in Bern Switzerland. The title of his talk was “The Implications of Pulmonary Hypertension for the Cardiothoracic Anesthesiologist.”

M-Irfan Suleman, MD, FAAP, FASA, is director of Ultrasound-Guided Interventional Techniques in Chronic Pain Management at the Society for Pediatric Pain Medicine’s annual meeting, which will be held on March 30, 2022, in Tampa, FL.
