Grants Received

Sung-Min Cho, DO, was awarded a K23 grant from the National Institutes of Health (NHLBI) for his project titled “Clots and Oxygen in Va-ExtracopoReal membrane oxygenation (CLOVER) Study.” This award will provide funding for 5 years.

Sung-Min Cho, DO, also received a 2022 Clinician Scientist Award from Johns Hopkins Medicine that will provide research support for 1 year.

Lakshmi Santhanam, PhD, was granted an R01 sub-award from the National Institutes of Health for her project titled “Mechanisms and interventions addressing accelerated cardiovascular disease risk in women with endometriosis.”

Wendy Ziai, MD, was awarded a 5-year R01 grant from the National Institutes of Health (NINDS/NIA) for her project titled “Repeated ASseSsmEnt of SurvivorS in ICH (REASSESS ICH).”

Accomplishments and Honors

Ivor Berkowitz, MD, was promoted to Professor of Clinical Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine with a secondary appointment in Pediatrics, effective December 1, 2021.

Mary Beth Brady, MD, FASE, was appointed to the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists Committee on Continuing Medical Education. The SCA is a global leader in comprehensive professional development that promotes the provision of safe, high-quality, cost-effective medical care for patients undergoing cardiovascular and thoracic procedures.  The committee provides physicians and healthcare professionals the highest quality, evidence-based education, advancing their knowledge, competence, performance in practice, and patient outcomes in order to improve the health of the public.

Steve Cohen, MD, participated in three podcasts recently. The first was titled “Over-the-counter analgesics and antipyretics in a post-pandemic world.” Moderated by Charles Vega, MD, this MEDSCAPE podcast is available here. He was also a participant in the ASRA webinar on “Cervical (facet) joint international guidelines,” which he co-chaired. Finally, he contributed to the inaugural Regional Anesthesia & Pain Medicine monthly webinar on the cover article “Multicenter study evaluating factors associated with treatment outcome for low back pain injections.”

Nick Dalesio, MD, MPH, was appointed Director of Pediatric Anesthesia Clinical Operations. In this role, which will officially start on February 14, 2022, he will lead the strategic management of pediatric anesthesia operations to optimize perioperative efficiency, patient safety, and outcomes.

Steve Frank, MD, received a “big shout out” in the weekly newsletter from the ASA for his efforts as chair of the Committee on Patient Blood Management to deal with the ongoing severe blood shortage that the country has been experiencing over the last 2 years. The committee created a document that summarizes ways to minimize the need for allogeneic blood transfusions.

Hannah Lonsdale, MBChB, spoke as part of the pediatric anesthesia panel at the Society for Technology in Anesthesia on “Machine Learning in Pediatric Anesthesia: The State of the Art.”

Lakshmi Santhanam, PhD, gave a talk at Texas A&M University titled “Role of LOXL2 in Vascular Aging.”

Matthew Soladay, CRNA, MSN will take on the position of Division Chief for the Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA) Division in ACCM. He will officially begin this role on February 21, 2022.

Jochen Steppan, MD, gave ground rounds at Brigham and Women’s Hospital with a talk titled “Pulmonary Hypertension Management – From Bench to Bedside.”

Irfan Suleman, MD, FAPA, FASA, gave a virtual presentation at the Johns Hopkins Gastroenterology Conference on “Beyond Opioids, Chronic Pain Management in Children and Adolescents.” He has also been invited to speak on pediatric chronic pain management in a virtual lecture to Children’s Hospital Multan, the pediatrics departments of Nishtar Medical College, Bahawalpur Medical College, Rahim Yar Khan Medical College, DG Khan Medical College, and Sahiwal Medical College, all in Pakistan. He will deliver that talk on February 24th, followed on the 26th by a virtual talk at the 33rd International Congress on Pediatrics at the Children’s Medical Center, Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Iran.

Jed Wolpaw, MD, M.Ed., was chosen by the Education Advisory Board of the Association of University Anesthesiologists (AUA) as the EAB Education Innovation Award winner for 2022. This award is being given in recognition of Jed’s contributions to the anesthesia specialty, his commitment to the academic mission, and his impact on the field. The award will be bestowed at the AUA annual meeting on March 18.
