Ben Albert, MD
Dr. Ben Albert is an Instructor of Anaesthesia at Harvard Medical School and Assistant in Critical Care Medicine in the Department of Anesthesiology, Critical Care and Pain Medicine at Boston Children’s Hospital. His clinical responsibilities are divided between both the medical-surgical intensive care unit and cardiac intensive care unit. He is also the Fellowship Director of the Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Program. His research interests are in the area of critical care nutrition and metabolism in the pediatric surgical patient. He is the co-principal investigator in a single-center randomized controlled trial investigating the safety of withholding stress ulcer prophylaxis in infants undergoing congenital heart surgery. His other areas of clinical research interest includes enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) and indirect calorimetry in the ICU.

Objectives:
- To describe the surgical stress response in critically ill pediatric patients.
- To describe enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) guidelines, specifically optimizing postoperative management in the ICU.
- To explain the fundamental principles of metabolic monitoring in the postoperative surgical patient.
