Lee Goeddel, MD, MPH, is the lead PI on a grant funded by the Johns Hopkins Pepper Older Americans Independence Center (OAIC) for a pilot study to assess the effect of a preoperative social work intervention on postoperative outcomes in frail adults at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Charlie Brown, MD, is his mentor.

Katherine Hoops, MD, MPH, received two Johns Hopkins Children’s Center Innovation Awards. The first is titled “Toward a Trauma-Informed System: Improving Implementation of a Trauma-Informed Approach to Care of Youth Assault Trauma Patients.” This project will characterize our current practice of implementing a trauma-informed approach in the care of youth assault trauma patients and then support the design of resources to provide education and training on trauma-sensitive care. The second is titled “Utilizing a Trauma-Informed Framework to Promote Health, Equity, and Resilience.” This award will support the training of all Johns Hopkins Child Life staff in a trauma-informed approach.

Katherine Hoops, MD, MPH, also received a Small Project Award from the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Critical Care. This award, titled “Clinician Education on Gun Violence Prevention and Policy: Developing Continuing Medical Education Modules Based on the CONFIRM Consortium,” will support the creation of comprehensive clinician-oriented e-learning modules on firearm injury epidemiology and evidence-based gun policy.

Adam Laytin, MD, MPH, was selected to receive an ACCM Mentored StAAR award for his project titled “Pilot Implementation of a Locally Adapted ICU Registry Protocol to Identify Opportunities for Quality Improvement in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.” Sean Berenholtz, MD, MHS, is his primary mentor.

Eellan Sivanesan, MD, was awarded a 5-year K08 grant from the National Cancer Institute for his project titled “Spinal cord stimulation for the attenuation of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy and enhanced chemotherapeutic efficacy.”

Accomplishments and Honors

Sean Barnes, MD, MBA, recently gave a virtual presentation at the American Delirium Society’s 11^th Annual Conference titled “Biomarkers of Postoperative Delirium in Children After Cardiac Bypass Surgery.”

Mary Beth Brady, MD, FASE, presented “Cardiac Anesthesia Secrets” at the Johns Hopkins University Structural Heart Disease Program Retreat. She shared tips and tricks of Interventional Echocardiography for structural heart procedures, including transcatheter edge to edge repair of mitral valve.

Mary Beth Brady, MD, FASE, and Sinead Nyhan, MD, wrote the recently published section of UpToDate on “Anesthesia for percutaneous cardiac valve interventions.” Across the world, the use of percutaneous interventions to treat structural heart disease has grown exponentially in the last decade and continues to grow with each technological advancement.

Lee Goeddel, MD, MPH, was inducted into the JHSOM Distinguished Society.

Adam Laytin, MD, MPH, was invited to lead a workshop on “The critical airway: How can you avoid airway disasters in unstable trauma patients?” on Jun 10, 2021, at the 20th International Conference on Emergency Medicine.

Jenny Lee, MD, was promoted to full professor in ACCM. Dr. Lee is an exemplary clinician-scientist, pediatric anesthesiologist, and educator who joined the ACCM faculty in 2010.

Srinivasa Raja, MD, served as an ad-hoc technical expert for the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS, NIH) to review a Helping End Addiction Long-term (HEAL) collaboration proposal. He also served on the Special Emphasis Panel scientific review branch of NINDS, NIH.

Matt Reschke, MD, presented grand rounds at Saint Louis University Hospital with a talk titled “Anesthesia at Outside Hospital.”

Robert Stevens, MD, will give the keynote lecture at the Symposium of the Chinese Medicine Academy, Peking Union Medical College on August 8, 2021. The title of his talk is “Critical Care Rehabilitation: Time and Challenge.”

M-Irfan Suleman, MD, was a virtual grand rounds speaker at University of Maryland Capitol Regional in Largo, MD. The title of his talk was “Beyond Opioids, Chronic Pain Management in Children and Adolescents.”

Jed Wolpaw, MD, M.Ed., has been selected to receive the Excellence in Education Award from the American Society of Anesthesiologists. He will be presented with the award on October 11^th during the ASA Annual Meeting in San Diego at the Rovenstein lecture—the most highly attended session at the meeting. The ASA Excellence in Education Award is the most prestigious education award in the anesthesia field.

An editorial is being published in the American Journal of Respiratory Cell and Molecular Biology to accompany the article by Mingming Han and Deepesh Pandey titled “ZMPSTE24 regulates SARS-CoV-2 spike protein-enhanced expression of endothelial plasminogen activator inhibitor-1” (see June Congratulations email).
