“Anesthesiologists In Transplantation Medicine – Do We Make A Difference?”

Presented by:
Tobias Piegeler, MD, MBA, DESAIC
Professor of Anesthesiology and Executive Attending Physician
Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care, University of Leipzig Medical Center, Leipzig, Germany

Objectives of this lecture:

  • To examine the role of the anesthesiologist in the process of solid organ transplantation.
  • To provide an overview of the available evidence regarding an impact of anesthesia on outcome after solid organ transplantation.
  • To provide an outlook regarding future research ideas/projects regarding the
relationship between anesthesia and outcome after solid organ transplantation.

Short biography Prof. Dr. Tobias Piegeler, MBA, DESAIC

Prof. Piegeler went to Medical School in Freiburg and Duesseldorf (Germany) and started his clinical training in anesthesia at the University Hospital Zurich (Switzerland) in 2009. During a three-year post-doc fellowship at the University of Illinois at Chicago (USA) he received training in molecular biology and conducted his first experimental studies regarding the anti-inflammatory effects of local anaesthetics in both pulmonary endothelial as well as in malignant cells before returning to Switzerland in 2014.

After successfully completing residency and a fellowship in pediatric anesthesia in Switzerland, he moved back to Germany in 2017, where he continued his career at the University of Leipzig Medical Center.

Prof. Piegeler is board-certified in Anesthesiology, Intensive Care Medicine as well as in Preclinical Emergency Medicine. He also holds the European Diploma in Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care (EDAIC), serves as an examiner for the EDAIC Part II and is a member of the ESAIC Research Group Euro-Periscope. He is currently a Full Professor in Anesthesiology at the University of Leipzig, Germany, and practices anesthesia as a clinician-scientist and member of the departmental leadership board at the Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care at the University of Leipzig Medical Center in Leipzig, Germany.

His current research focuses on the effects of (local) anesthetics and other perioperative interventions on inflammatory processes and outcome in cancer and metastases as well as in the field of organ and tissue transplantation.
