Presented by:

Associate Professor, UMass Chan Medical School
Objectives of this lecture:
After attending this activity, the participant will demonstrate the ability to:
- Differentiate central airway obstruction caused by lesions within the airway (intrinsic) vs. external compression (extrinsic)
- Understand how anesthesia, positive pressure ventilation, and neuromuscular blockade can precipitate airway collapse and hemodynamic instability
- Recognize clinical and radiographic features that define patients at high risk, including symptoms, positional intolerance, and CT-based airway measurements
- Apply a tailored anesthetic strategy based on risk assessment, including indications for awake techniques, staged induction, and extracorporeal support
- Recognize early intraoperative warning signs and implement a multidisciplinary escalation framework to respond effectively
