Guest Speaker: Nicole Rizkalla, MD
Dr. Rizkalla earned her MD at the University of Vermont. She completed a residency in pediatrics at the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, and a critical care fellowship at the Children’s Hospital of
Philadelphia. She pursued a second residency in Anesthesiology at the Johns Hopkins Hospital which was followed by specialty training in Transplant and Hepatobiliary Anesthesia.
She joined the faculty at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where she is currently an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology and Director for the Hepatobiliary Surgery and Living Donor Liver Transplant Services. Her clinical and academic focus is on anesthetic management for liver transplant/hepatobiliary surgery and early/expedited recovery after liver transplant surgery. In recognition of this work, Dr. Rizkalla was recently
recruited by the Johns Hopkins Comprehensive Transplant Center to serve as the first Perioperative Anesthesia Consultant/Coordinator for Abdominal Organ Transplant. She leads preoperative efforts for medical
optimization and prerehabilitation of inpatient and outpatient patients with end stage liver disease awaiting liver transplant.
In addition to her interests in transplant and hepatobiliary anesthesia, Dr. Rizkalla plays an active role in the administration of the department, serving as both the Associate Vice Chair for Clinical Operations and the Director of the Emergency Airway Response Team.
