Objectives

  1. Describe the pathophysiology behind the hemodynamic changes in cirrhosis.
  2. Explain the altered pharmacokinetics of commonly used perioperative medications in patients with ESLD.
  3. Recognize airway challenges present in patients with cirrhosis.

Dr. Amy Kloosterboer is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine at Stanford University. She earned her MD at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health and completed residencies in both Internal Medicine and Anesthesiology at Stanford University. She continued at Stanford where she completed a fellowship in Critical Care Medicine prior to joining the faculty in 2020. Clinically, she divides her time between the MSICU, perioperative anesthesia service, and in the OR as part of the liver transplant anesthesia division. Her academic focus is on the perioperative management of cirrhotic patients. She also serves as the director of the resident perioperative rotation and the critical care fellowship anesthesia elective.
