Dr. Glenn Whitman is an associate professor of surgery at Johns Hopkins, where he has directed the cardiac surgery ICU and quality assurance program since 2009. He completed his surgical training at the University of Pennsylvania and his cardiothoracic training at the University of Colorado, later serving as assistant professor and chief of cardiothoracic surgery at the Denver VA. He went on to lead cardiac surgery at the Medical College of Pennsylvania and the University of Maryland, and held key leadership roles at Temple University and Thomas Jefferson Hospital in intensive care, perioperative services, and transplantation. His early research on cardiac ischemia-reperfusion injury and bioenergetics was funded by the NIH and VA, while his more recent work has focused on ICU quality improvement. A longtime contributor to national surgical conferences, Dr. Whitman served as Chair of the STS Workforce on Critical Care from 2014 to 2024 and remains actively involved in perioperative care programming.
