Dr. O’Brien completed her Pediatric Critical Care Medicine fellowship at Johns Hopkins, where she also pursued a T32 research fellowship in pediatric neuroscience. She joined the faculty in 2018 and has since established herself as an outstanding clinician-scientist dedicated to improving neurologic outcomes for critically ill children.

Since joining the faculty, Dr. O’Brien has built an exceptional research program centered on pediatric resuscitation. She leads a preclinical laboratory focused on the prevention, early detection, and treatment of brain injury after cardiac arrest and serves as site principal investigator for the international NIH-funded Pediatric Influence of Cooling duration on Efficacy in Cardiac Arrest Patients (P-ICECAP) trial. Her work bridges laboratory discovery and clinical care and has earned national recognition and support from various organizations, including the NIH and the American Heart Association.

In addition to her research accomplishments, Dr. O’Brien is a dedicated educator and program leader. She serves as the Director of the Pediatric Neurocritical Care Program which supports multidisciplinary care for children with acute neurologic injury. Additionally, she serves as Medical Director of the Hopkins Outreach for Pediatric Education (HOPE) office, where she leads innovative training initiatives in pediatric resuscitation for trainees and faculty.
