Dr. Nadia Hensley was invited for a Visiting Professorship and Grand Rounds lecture at Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell Health/Long Island Jewish Hospital on Sept. 14-15. In addition, Dr. Hensley:

  • Was awarded the 2026 SABM Volunteer Award, a non-board member, who demonstrates consistent active participation, superior engagement, and a strong commitment to the mission and vision of patient blood management.
  • Attended the Society for Patient Blood Management annual meeting in Atlanta, GA, where she moderated multiple sessions, presented the “Best Papers in PBM 2025-2026” session and worked as scientific chair of the abstracts session.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS, AWARDS & HONORS

Dr. Phillip Cohen was awarded the Society for Pediatric Sedation 2026 Outstanding Junior Physician Faculty Abstract Award for his abstract, “Remimazolam Implementation Across a Pediatric Sedation Service.” Co-authors were Drs. Alexis Thompson and Sapna Kudchadkar.

Barry Lepley, CRNA, DNP, recently joined the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing as part-time faculty in the Nurse Anesthesia Program, where he is co-coordinating both a didactic course and a clinical course. Barry’s DNP project, focused on enhancing CRNA preceptor feedback and evaluation of nurse anesthesia residents, has been accepted for publication in the AANA Journal. The article is expected to be published this winter.

Dr. Danny Muehlschlegel was selected by the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER) for the Academy of Research Mentors in Anesthesiology (ARMA). ARMA facilitates the development of educational and research programs for junior faculty members, supports faculty members in mentoring roles, and is a resource for the development of mentors and role models in academic anesthesia. PROMOTIONS & APPOINTMENTS

Dr. Nadia B. Hensley, Associate Professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine, will become Medical Director of the Center for Perioperative Optimization (CPO), effective October 1, 2026. This appointment reflects Nadia’s exceptional record of leadership within our department as Physician Advisor and Deputy Vice Chair for Quality, Safety, and Service.

Nadia has served our department for well over a decade in roles focused on safe, high-quality perioperative care. Since 2014, she has led and contributed to numerous quality and safety initiatives, including the hospital-wide implementation of intraoperative barcode scanning for blood product administration, efforts to reduce unnecessary intraoperative transfusions, Patient Based Learning Discussions, root cause analyses, credentialing, and improvements in quality metrics. Most recently, she has served as Physician Advisors’ Lead for Johns Hopkins Hospital, with a focus on reducing surgical site infections.

In her new role, Nadia will lead the continued development of the CPO, including building out the clinic and its systems, representing the CPO in perioperative and enterprise-level discussions, and partnering with Epic and IT colleagues on technology initiatives such as automated clearance pathways and ambient documentation tools. She will also explore opportunities to enroll CPO patients in important clinical trials.
