Mohammad Khalilzad – I had a rather complex case in electrophysiology where I needed labs run every hour. Mohammad was the anesthesia tech for my room earlier in the day but got pulled to Weinberg in the early afternoon. When I needed labs run, I called the tech who took over who wasn’t able to answer his phone, but I was able to get a hold of Mohammad who let me know he had been sent elsewhere. Despite all of that, Mohammad called me not long after to let me know he had come all the way from Weinberg to 5th floor Zayed just to run my labs for me! I could tell from how breathless he was on the phone that he really ran to make it up to me when he didn’t really have to do so. I really appreciate him going above and beyond. ACCOMPLISHMENTS, AWARDS & HONORS
Dr. Deondra Asike co-developed a free CME webinar, “Cannabinoids for Chronic Pain: Understanding the Science and Navigating the Regulatory Landscape,” in collaboration with MedChi, The Maryland State Medical Society, the Maryland Prescription Drug Monitoring Program, and the Maryland Cannabis Administration. The 60-minute course helps Maryland prescribers navigate state cannabis regulations, apply cannabinoids as non-opioid options for chronic pain, and screen for Cannabis Use Disorder.
Dr. Maria Bauer has been invited to present “LOXL2 Inhibition Reverses HFpEF in Male ZSF1 Rats, While Females Are Protected” at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions 2026. She was also invited to moderate the session “Cardiovascular Cases: Rare Presentations, Novel Rescue Strategies, and Unexpected Complications” at this meeting.
Dr. Elena Bertolino co-authored the chapter “Infections of the Central Nervous System” in a new textbook: Nursing Guide for Pediatric Neuroscience Patients, being published this month by Springer.
Dr. Ima Chinedozi has been appointed associate professor in the department of international health within the school of public health. She was also appointed to American Society of Anesthesiologists’ Committee on Global Health. Dr. Chinedozi was a panelist and gave a talk entitled “It Takes a Village: Anesthesia Leadership in Strengthening Global Surgery” at the National Medical Association Conference 2026 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Dr. Nick Dalesio has been appointed to a two-year member term of ASA’s 2027 Committee on Environmental Health.
Dr. Christopher Robinson authored Chapter 40: External devices for pain and depression in A Modern Atlas for Implantable Devices of the Spine, Brain, and Nerve 2026. Dr. Robinson has been invited to deliver a grand rounds presentation: Peptides for the Harvard Pain and Headache Rounds on May 19, 2027. Dr. Jose Suarez: On July 29, 2026, The Maryland Department of Commerce awarded $1,500,000 for the Walter E. Dandy Professorship in Neurosciences Critical Care to the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, matched by $1,500,000 in qualified funding from the university. The endowed professorship will support Jose I. Suarez, MD, FNCS, FANA, FAAN, who is recognized nationally and internationally as a leader in neurocritical care, to catalyze the translation of his innovations into clinical tools, industry partnerships, and commercialization opportunities. PROMOTIONS & APPOINTMENTS
Dr. Abdenour Abib has been appointed Medical Director of ZBOR3. Dr. Abib earned his medical degree from the University of the Caribbean and completed his residency at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. He is a board-certified anesthesiologist with over 20 years of experience in adult medicine. An accomplished clinical leader, he has successfully directed multidisciplinary teams of anesthesiologists, CRNAs, and trainees across two states before joining ACCM earlier this year.
Dr. Abib’s career path has been shaped by interactions with true pioneers in medicine, including Dr. Alon P. Winnie (ASRA Founding Father), Dr. M. Gazi Yaşargil (pioneer of modern microneurosurgery), and Dr. Ossama Al-Mefty (leader in skull base surgery). In his role as Medical Director of ZBOR3, Dr. Abib will succeed Dr. Andrew Wang in providing operational leadership, partnering with surgical, nursing and perioperative leaders and ensuring that patients receive safe, efficient and high-quality anesthesia care.
Dr. Haitham Al-Grain has been appointed as an Associate Director within the clinical operations team. Dr. Haitham Al-Grain earned his medical degree from the George Washington University, where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha. He completed his anesthesiology residency, pain medicine fellowship and Master of Business Administration at Johns Hopkins and joined the ACCM faculty in 2011.
Dr. Al-Grain’s academic interests center on non-operating room anesthesia, particularly anesthesia for advanced bronchoscopy and endoscopy, on which he has lectured widely. He serves on the executive board of the Maryland Society of Anesthesiologists and is an active member of the Society for Ambulatory Anesthesia. He is currently on the Board of Directors of the American Society of Anesthesiologists as the director from Maryland and has served two three-year terms as a Johns Hopkins faculty senator. In his new role as Associate Director of Operations Analytics, Dr. Al-Grain will focus on developing and maintaining analytical infrastructure that will inform departmental decision making.
Dr. Gari D. Clifford will join the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine as Professor, effective September 1, 2026. Dr. Clifford will hold a dual appointment in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the Whiting School of Engineering, with ACCM serving as his primary and administrative home.
Dr. Clifford will serve as the inaugural Director of Perioperative and Critical Care Data Science & AI. In this role, he will define and lead the department’s scientific agenda in artificial intelligence and advanced analytics, developing methods that draw on multimodal clinical data (physiologic waveforms, imaging, audio and video, and the electronic health record) and driving the validation and deployment of AI-enabled tools in our operating rooms, ICUs, and procedural areas. He will also lead the departmental use of platforms such as PMAP and SickBay, build center-level research programs, and mentor faculty and trainees in perioperative and critical care data science.
In parallel, Dr. Clifford will serve as Executive Director for Translational Biomedical Data Science, a University-level role reporting jointly to ACCM and BME. This position is designed to bridge engineering innovation and perioperative and critical care clinical science, moving discoveries from proof-of-concept to validated clinical deployment, building cross-school research teams, and aligning the data infrastructure and governance that make that translation possible.
Dr. Wei Dong Gao has been promoted to the rank of Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine. This well-earned promotion recognizes his standing as an internationally recognized authority in cardiac muscle mechanics and excitation-contraction coupling. Dr. Gao represents an increasingly rare figure in academic medicine: a busy clinical cardiac anesthesiologist who has, for more than two decades, simultaneously sustained an independently funded basic science laboratory of the highest caliber.
Dr. Gao first came to Johns Hopkins in 1992 as an International Research Fellow of the American Heart Association and joined the faculty in 2002 after fellowship training in cardiac anesthesia. His is the only laboratory in the world able to simultaneously measure force development, sarcomere length, and intracellular calcium concentration in live cardiac muscle, a technique he was central in developing and has used to define fundamental mechanisms underlying myocardial stunning, heart failure, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and right ventricular dysfunction in pulmonary hypertension. Among his seminal contributions is the discovery that the nitroxyl anion increases myofilament responsiveness to calcium, work published in the Journal of Physiology and Circulation Research and accompanied in each case by an invited editorial. Supported by the NIH and the American Heart Association, he has published more than 70 peer-reviewed studies cited over 5,500 times.
Dr. David C. Stockwell has been promoted to the rank of Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine. This well-earned promotion recognizes Dr. Stockwell’s exceptional leadership, scholarship, and dedication to advancing patient safety, quality improvement, education, and clinical excellence. As Chief Medical Officer of the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center, he has made a profound impact on our institution while advancing pediatric healthcare on a national and international scale.
Since joining Johns Hopkins in 2019, Dr. Stockwell has transformed safety and quality initiatives across the Children’s Center, strengthening systems that improve patient outcomes and care delivery. An internationally recognized leader in pediatric patient safety, his pioneering work in the identification and prevention of adverse events has shaped best practices in children’s hospitals around the world. In addition to his outstanding administrative leadership, Dr. Stockwell is a highly regarded educator and mentor who has trained and inspired countless learners while advancing the science of quality improvement through impactful research and national collaborations.
Dr. Shruti Sudhakar has been appointed as an Associate Director within the clinical operations team. Dr. Sudhakar earned her medical degree from Penn State School of Medicine, completed her anesthesiology residency at University of Maryland and finished two fellowships in regional and acute pain management as well as neuro-anesthesiology at Johns Hopkins before joining the faculty in 2024.
She has held several educational and leadership roles within the department, including Director of Resident Education and Assistant Fellowship Director of Regional Anesthesiology and Acute Pain Management. She brings broad clinical experience, a strong commitment to resident education and mentorship, and significant institutional knowledge. In her new role as Associate Director of Clinical Staffing and Workforce Planning, Dr. Sudhakar will focus on clinical staffing, workforce planning, and operational improvement, working collaboratively with department leadership and clinical teams to develop effective and sustainable staffing strategies.
Dr. Robert W. Thomsen has been promoted to Professor of Clinical Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine. This well-deserved recognition reflects his outstanding contributions as a clinician, educator, administrator, and leader. Throughout his career at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Thomsen has played an integral role in advancing perioperative care, improving patient safety and experience, and strengthening clinical operations across the health system.
He has been influential in the development and integration of medical staff rules and regulations, credentialing, and professional practice evaluation systems to ensure provider competency, equity, and accountability. He has also been instrumental in the creation of new service lines and facilities, including the first weekend elective surgery program at Johns Hopkins, an interventional brachytherapy suite, an MRI guided prostate ablation suite, and the fertility center.
