Michael C. Grant, MD, MSE is an Associate Professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine, with dual appointment in the Department of Surgery.  A lifelong resident of the state of Maryland, Michael initially completed an undergraduate degree in Neurobiology and Physiology from the University of Maryland, College Park, and went on to receive his medical degree from the University of Maryland, Baltimore, where he graduated AOA and was class president all four years. He subsequently transitioned across town to Johns Hopkins University to complete his residency in Anesthesiology, where he won the Frank L. Coulson, Jr. Award for Clinical Excellence. This was followed by fellowships in both Cardiothoracic Anesthesia and Surgical Critical Care.  Dr. Grant serves as the Medical Director of the Cardiovascular Surgical ICU and Director of Clinical Operations for the Division of Cardiac Anesthesia.

Dr. Grant’s research interests include quality improvement, implementation science and the design and maintenance of complex perioperative programs. He was one of the inaugural graduates of the Armstrong Institute Resident Scholars (AIRS) Program and is a core faculty member in the Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality.  Dr. Grant is interested in the adoption of outside industry principles and frameworks to improve the delivery of healthcare and has completed a Masters in Systems Engineering (SE) from the Johns Hopkins Whiting School of Engineering and Applied Physics Laboratories and is a founder and content expert for a novel Masters curriculum for Healthcare SE.

Dr. Grant was named the institutional Director of Anesthesiology for Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS), and has collaborated with multidisciplinary groups to establish guidelines for more than a dozen ERAS service lines at Johns Hopkins. He has been instrumental in the expansion of ERAS across the institution, as well as the adoption of ERAS at affiliated hospitals in Saudi Arabia and Brazil.  He is the anesthesiology lead and co-investigator for the AHRQ Improving Surgical Care and Recovery (ISCR) program, which endeavors to implement ERAS in 5 major service lines across hundreds of hospitals domestically.  Dr. Grant has been engaged in national and international ERAS guidelines development, including work with the Perioperative Quality Initiative (POQI), Evidence Based Perioperative Medicine (EBPOM), ERAS® International and American Society of Enhanced Recovery (ASER).  He currently sits on the American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology Guidelines for Coronary Revascularization working group, the Executive Board of the ERAS® Cardiac Surgery Society and is the inaugural chair of the Enhanced Recovery After Cardiac Surgery working group in the Society for Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists (SCA).  His work has led to more than 85 publications and 100 national and international speaking engagements.
