Dr. Nadia B. Hensley Named Medical Director of the Center for Perioperative Optimization

We are delighted to announce that Dr. Nadia B. Hensley, MD, Associate Professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine, will become Medical Director of the Center for Perioperative Optimization (CPO), effective October 1, 2026. This appointment reflects Nadia’s exceptional record of leadership within our department as Physician Advisor and Deputy Vice Chair for Quality, Safety, and Service.

Nadia has served our department for well over a decade in roles focused on safe, high-quality perioperative care. Since 2014, she has led and contributed to numerous quality and safety initiatives, including the hospital-wide implementation of intraoperative barcode scanning for blood product administration, efforts to reduce unnecessary intraoperative transfusions, Patient Based Learning Discussions, root cause analyses, credentialing, and improvements in quality metrics. Most recently, she has served as Physician Advisors’ Lead for Johns Hopkins Hospital, with a focus on reducing surgical site infections.

Nadia completed her residency and chief residency in Anesthesiology at Virginia Commonwealth University Health System before joining Johns Hopkins for fellowship training in Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology in 2011. She is a nationally recognized leader in patient blood management and coagulation and currently serves in leadership roles with the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists and the Society for the Advancement of Patient Blood Management.

In her new role, Nadia will lead the continued development of the CPO, including building out the clinic and its systems, representing the CPO in perioperative and enterprise-level discussions, and partnering with Epic and IT colleagues on technology initiatives such as automated clearance pathways and ambient documentation tools. She will also explore opportunities to enroll CPO patients in important clinical trials.

We would also like to extend my sincere thanks to Dr. Jerry Stonemetz for his leadership and service as Medical Director of the CPO. His time and commitment have been instrumental in advancing the center and establishing a strong foundation for its continued growth. We are grateful for his contributions and the many ways he has supported the CPO and our department.
