Anesthesia technology is an allied health profession specifically focused on fundamental and advanced clinical procedures which assist the anesthesia provider in the safe and efficient care of patients. Individuals desiring to be a Certified Anesthesia Technologist (Cer.A.T.T.) must attend an approved or an accredited educational program. The American Society of Anesthesia Technologists and Technicians (ASATT) recognizes individuals who have passed the ASATT National Certification Exam (NCE). The anesthesia technologist professional works under the direction of an anesthesia care provider as a vital member of the anesthesia care team. Certified Anesthesia Technologists are proficient in the application, acquisition, preparation, and troubleshooting of various types of equipment required for the delivery of anesthesia care. Their knowledge base includes anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, and principles of anesthesia technology.

The Johns Hopkins Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine, improves the health of the community and the world by setting the standard of excellence in Patient and Family-Centered Care, Education and Research. Congruent with the mission of the Johns Hopkins Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine department; the mission of the anesthesia technology program is to be the world leader in the educational, clinical, and professional development of anesthesia technologists. The anesthesia technologist will be an invaluable member of the anesthesiology patient care team.

Program Objectives

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate professionalism and adherence to ethical and legal standards of the anesthesia technology profession.
  • Demonstrate critical thinking skills in relation to prioritizing, analyzing, and resolving issues in the anesthesia environment.
  • Exhibit competency in the role of the anesthesia technologist in various healthcare settings.
  • Provide safe practice within the healthcare environment.
  • Communicate effectively with patients and members of the inter-professional healthcare team.

After completing the program, will I be able to work as a Certified Anesthesia Technologists? 
No. The graduate must take and pass the national certification exam offered by The American Society of Anesthesia Technologist and Technicians before you can work as a certified technologist.

How do I apply to take the National Certification exam to become an anesthesia technologist?
The graduate must visit The American Society of Technologists and Technicians and apply.

Where can I work after completing CCBC / JHH Anesthesia Technologist program?
The anesthesia technologist can work as an integral member of any anesthesia care team.

What is the difference between a Technician and a Technologist?
A certified technologist holds a higher-level certification than a technician and depending on the institution technologist may have different work duties/responsibilities than a technician.

Is your program accredited?
The program is accredited by the State of Maryland Higher Education Committee and approved by The American Society of Anesthesia Technologist and Technicians. We will be pursuing accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs.

How long is the program?
The program is a two-year program. During the first year students will complete their prerequisite coursework and the second year is anesthesia technology courses.

Where do classes take place?
The anesthesia technology courses are held at the Johns Hopkins Hospital and the Community College of Baltimore County (Dundalk campus).

New students

The Anesthesia Technology Program partners with the Community College of Baltimore County to provide a widely-recognized degree program, along with the specialized training. In order to apply for the program, you will need to apply to the Community College of Baltimore County and select the Anesthesia Technology program as your major.

Current students of CCBC

Current students of CCBC must apply for the Anesthesia Technology Program in the CCBC School of Health Professions.
