We are delighted to announce that Dr. Michael C. Grant has been appointed as Division Chief of Cardiac Anesthesiology in the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Grant is internationally recognized for his leadership in developing and implementing programs that optimize perioperative care and improve outcomes for surgical patients, and we are confident he will bring that same vision and dedication to this new role.

Dr. Grant joined the ACCM faculty in 2016 after completing his anesthesiology residency and fellowships in Cardiac Anesthesiology and Surgical Intensive Care at Hopkins. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2020 and Professor in 2026. He holds a Master of Science in Systems Engineering from the Johns Hopkins Whiting School of Engineering and serves as the Director of the Cardiovascular Surgical ICU (CVSICU), Director of Anesthesiology for the institutional ERAS initiative, and Director of Clinical Operations for the Division of Cardiac Anesthesiology. His work has been instrumental in advancing Enhanced Recovery After Surgery programs across multiple surgical specialties, including originating the ERAS program for cardiac surgery at Johns Hopkins and disseminating these principles nationally and internationally. His scholarship includes more than 170 peer-reviewed publications and over 150 invited presentations worldwide.

We also want to take this opportunity to extend our deepest gratitude to Dr. Jake Abernathy, who has served as Division Chief for the past nine years. His leadership, dedication, and commitment to the division have been invaluable, and we are grateful for everything he has contributed to building and sustaining a world-class program.
