Dr. Adam Laytin received a StAAR Transformative Award for the project “Pilot Implementation and Dissemination of a Context-Appropriate Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia Prevention Bundle in Ethiopia.” His collaborators for this project are Dr. Sapna Kudchadkar, Dr. Bhakti Hansoti (Emergency Medicine), and Dr. William Checkley (Pulmonology/Critical Care Medicine).

Dr. Rohan Mathur received a StAAR Investigator Award for the project “Developing Novel Similarity Mapping Metrics And Visualization Tool to Identify and Visualize Dynamic Endotypes and Cohorts of Patients with Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage.” His collaborators for Peter Dziedzic, Niteesh Potu, Lin Cheng, Eusebia Calvillo, Jose Suarez from the NCCU with collaborators from the Whiting School of Engineering.

Dr. Susanne Muehlschlegel received a StAAR Investigator Award for the project “Pilot Trial of a Digital Web/Mobile/Tablet-Based Goals of Care Decision Aid to Promote Shared Decision Making Between Clinicians and Families in the NeuroICU.” Her collaborator for this project is Dr. Jamie Perin (BEAD core).

Dr. Jennifer Schramm received a StAAR Mentored Award for the project “Machine Learning to Identify Risk Factors for the Development of Necrotizing Enterocolitis in Children with Congenital Heart Disease.” Her mentors and collaborators for this project are Dr. Allen Everett (Pedriatrics), Dr. Melania Bembea, and Dr. Cedric Manlhiot (Director, Cardiovascular Analytic Intelligence Initiative).

Dr. Vishank A. Shah received a StAAR Mentored Award for the project “Individualization of Arterial Blood Pressure Targets in Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage Using Non-invasive Multimodal Monitoring.” His mentor for this project is Dr. Jose Suarez.

Promotions and Appointments

Vahid Grami, MD, MPH, has joined the department as an Assistant Professor and the Program Director for the Anesthesiology Pain Medicine Fellowship as of July 1st.

Adam Laytin, MD, MPH, was appointed an Honorary Assistant Professor at St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in the Department of Intensive Care Medicine.

Pooja O’Neil, MD, MBA, has been appointed Program Director for our Johns Hopkins Pediatric Anesthesiology Fellowship.

Emmet Whitaker, MD, FAAP, is stepping into the role of Associate Program Director.

Sung-Min Cho, DO, MHS, gave a talk entitled “ELSO Guidelines on Neurological Monitoring and Management of ECMO” at the Korea Hospital Cardiac Surgery Grand Rounds in Seoul, South Korea in June 2024. Dr Cho also gave 3 presentations at the Asia Pacific Neurocritical Care Conference in Kuching Sarawak, Malaysia in June 2024. His talks were entitled “Neuroprognostication in Comatose Adult Survivors of Cardiac Arrest”, “Neurocritical Care of ECMO – ELSO Guideline”, and “Neuromonitoring of ECMO”. In July 2024, Dr Cho gave a talk entitled “Neurocritical Care of ECMO – ELSO Guidelines on Neurological Monitoring and Management of ECMO” at the Samsung Medical Center Critical Care Grand Rounds in Seoul, South Korea.

Steve Frank, MD, and colleagues were featured in a Johns Hopkins Medicine Newsroom press release for their recent article “A propensity-matched cohort study of intravenous iron versus red cell transfusions for preoperative iron-deficiency anemia”, which was recently published in Anesthesia & Analgesia. Anita Gupta, DO, MPP, PharmD, FASA, will be speaking at the California Physicians Medical Association on Women’s Health in Monterey, CA. Her presentation is entitled “Women’s Pain Matters: Expert Insights & Best Practices” and will be delivered on September 7, 2024. Dr Gupta also published a WebMD Expert Blog on managing chronic pain.

An article published by Nadia Hensley and colleagues in Anesthesia & Analgesia was selected as the front cover as the featured article for August 2024, “Perioperative plasma in addition to red blood cell transfusions are associated with increased venous thromboembolism risk postoperatively”. Dr Hensley was also interviewed by the editor of Anesthesia & Analgesia for a podcast on the featured article for August 2024.

Adam Laytin, MD, MPH, is co-directing the International Lecture Series for African Critical Care Fellows with intensivists from Ethiopia and Ghana through the JHU World Health Organization Collaborating Center for Emergency, Critical and Operative Care, which launched this month.

Rohan Mathur, MD, MPA, gave Combined Critical Care Grand Rounds at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine on “Evolving Concepts in Intracranial Pressure Management”. Dr Mathur also gave a keynote talk entitled “The Future of Stroke Care: The Revolutionary Potential of AI, Machine Learning and Brain Computer Interfaces” at the Stanley Wissman Stroke Symposium in Fort Wayne, IN, in May 2024.

Susanne Muehlschlegel, MD, MPH, FNCS, FCCM, FAAN, was interviewed by the American Academy of Neurology Continuum about her recent review article entitled “Prognostication in neurocritical care”. The interview can be found on the Continuum website. Dr Muehlschlegel was also invited to submit a full proposal to the Donaghue Foundation for her project “Impact of a shared decision-making intervention for families of severe acute brain injury patients”.

CORRECTION: In last month’s email, it was reported that Daniel Nyhan traveled to Tanzania. It was Aoibhinn Nyhan, MD, and Rob Greenberg, MD, who traveled to Bugando Medical Center, Mwanza, Tanzania (May 18-26) to provide expert clinical care to both children and adults undergoing facial plastic surgery as part of an ongoing program with Healing the Children, Northeast. In addition to clinical care they both provided educational lectures and intraoperative teaching with the anesthesia clinicians. Dr Aoibhinn Nyhan’s presence was invaluable!

Katie O’Conor MD MBA was a collaborator and co-author on the invited presentation, “Colocating Syringe Services, COVID-19 Vaccination, and Infectious Disease Testing: Baltimore’s Experience” at the Health Affairs Reimagining Public Health Special Issue Panel in June, along with colleagues Heidari O (lead), Meyer D, Lowensen K, Patil A, LaRicci J, Hunt D, Bocek AP, Cargill V, and Farley JE.

John B. Sampson, MD, was featured on Gambia Radio and Television Services for his work on developing an oxygen-generating plant at the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital. Gambian officials, including the Minister of Health and the First Lady, discussed the impact this Society of Critical Care Medicine-sponsored project has on the delivery of medical care in The Gambia. The video recording of the broadcast can be found on YouTube. Dr Sampson’s work across Ghana, The Gambia, Liberia, and Sierra Leone was highlighted by the Society of Critical Care Medicine Podcast this month. Dr Sampson also was part of an expert panel for the Coalition for Universities of Global Health (CUGH) on “The Argument for Equitable Care: A Conversation with Champions and Experts”, which can be found on YouTube.
