Steve Frank, MD, and colleagues recently published “A propensity-matched cohort study of intravenous iron versus red cell transfusions for preoperative iron-deficiency anemia” in Anesthesia & Analgesia. Their findings were shared in a press release by the Johns Hopkins Medicine Newsroom.
In their study, the research team used the TriNetX Research Network database to analyze data from over 150,000 patients who were diagnosed with iron-deficient anemia prior to surgery. The team compared a cohort of patients who were given a preoperative iron infusion with a cohort who were given a preoperative blood transfusion. They found that patients who received an iron infusion had a 37% reduction in mortality and a 24% reduction in morbidity compared to those who received a blood transfusion.
