Acute Care Nurse Practitioner
[email protected]
Marie Depew first began working in the Johns Hopkins neurocritical care unit as a clinical nurse intern in 1998 and then as a bedside nurse for 3 years. From 2002 to 2005 she worked as a member of the Johns Hopkins Lifeline Critical Care Transport team, while earning her master’s degree in trauma critical care/acute care nursing. She returned to the neurocritical care unit as a nurse practitioner in 2005 and has been there ever since.
On a day-to-day basis, Ms. Depew works collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team from Neurosurgery and Neurology to treat patients with neurologic injuries and disease. In her role as a nurse practitioner, she provides continuity of care across all of the disciplines. She helps to form diagnoses, creates treatment plans, performs procedures, and serves as a preceptor to nurse practitioner students who rotate through the unit from several universities. Ms. Depew also gives several neurology-based lectures per year to nurse practitioner students at the University of Maryland and holds an adjunct faculty position there. Ms. Depew loves being challenged clinically and being able to learn something new every day. She also values the opportunity to be a resource for both clinicians and patients and to guide patients and their families through a difficult time.
Although Ms. Depew is not currently involved in any personal research projects, she has published about the role of nurse practitioners in neurocritical care and would like to conduct research related to patient safety and clinical outcomes.
When not at work, Ms. Depew enjoys spending time with her family and children, coaching soccer, and running half marathons.
