Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care Coordinator
kstanic1@jhmi.edu
Kristen Brown has worked as a pediatric critical care nurse practitioner in the Johns Hopkins PICU since 2006 and has helped to develop the Nurse Practitioner program. She treats all types of critically ill children from birth through adulthood but has a special interest in the care of children with congenital heart disease. She currently works as the Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care Coordinator. In this role, Ms. Brown focuses on research and protocol development for critically ill children with congenital heart disease, as well as cardiac education of nurses, nurse practitioners, and fellows.
Ms. Brown’s research relates to patients with congenital heart disease and ways to improve postoperative outcome. An upcoming study with Dr. Kristen Nelson will look at risk factors for thrombus formation in children with congenital heart defects. Clot formation is associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality. She anticipates that this research will help clinicians to identify patients at high risk and enable them to take proactive measures through implementation of anticoagulation measures.
Ms. Brown is currently enrolled in the Doctorate in Nursing Practice (DNP) program at the John Hopkins School of Nursing and has recently been awarded the Johns Hopkins Medicine Simulation Fellowship.
Education
Ms. Brown earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) at the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing in 2001 and her Master of Science degree with an Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner focus at the University of Maryland School of Nursing in 2006. She is currently enrolled in the DNP program at the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing.[/wr_text][/wr_column][/wr_row]
