Dr. Vishank A. Shah is an assistant professor of neurology, anesthesiology and critical care medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. His area of clinical expertise is in the care of critically ill neurological and neurosurgical patients and serves as an attending neurointensivist in the Johns Hopkins and Bayview Medical Center neurocritical care unit. Particularly, Dr. Shah’s clinical interests focus in on subarachnoid hemorrhage, intracerebral, intraventricular hemorrhage and cerebrovascular disorders. Dr. Shah also serves as the resident education director in the neurocritical care division.
Dr. Shah received his medical degree from Seth G.S. Medical College and K.E.M. Hospital in Mumbai, India under the aegis of the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences. He then completed his residency in neurology at Baylor College of Medicine, where he also served as chief resident for education and quality improvement. He was awarded the academic achievement award and resident teacher of the year at Baylor College of Medicine. Subsequently, Dr. Shah pursued a fellowship in Neurocritical Care at Johns Hopkins University. He then developed the neurocritical care service at University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, where he served as an assistant professor of neurology and neurosurgery and served as co-director of the neurocritical care division.
Dr. Shah’s research is focused on cerebral autoregulation impairment and its applications in management of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage patients, variability in care practices and resource allocation in subarachnoid hemorrhage, as well as long term functional outcomes in subarachnoid, intracerebral and intraventricular hemorrhage with particular interest in impact of medical complications and hospital events on long-term outcomes in these patients.
Among his many professional activities, Dr. Shah serves on the educational products committee of the Neurocritical Care Society, tasked with development and distribution of educational products in the field of neurocritical care. He also serves as a peer reviewer for several journals, and serves on the editorial board of the journal, Neurohospitalist. He was recently awarded a Presidential Citation 2021 by the Neurocritical Care Society for his service to the field of neurocritical care. He is also a member of the Sigma Xi Scientific Honor Society.
