Where We’ve Been

Dayanand Medical Center Operation Walk Orthopaedic Surgical Mission

Collaborated with Operation walk MD, a not-for-profit, volunteer medical service organization that provides free surgical treatment for patients in developing countries and in the United States. This organization treats those suffering from disabling arthritis and other debilitating bone and joint conditions. Our mission is to help those who have little to no access to life-improving care. All care including joint replacement implants are provided at no cost. This is possible through the generous donations of our individual and corporate supporters.

Guangzhou Women and Children’s Medical Center Global Health Initiative: Obstetric Anesthesia Outreach

Collaborated with No Pain Labor & Delivery – Global Health Initiative (NPLD-GHI) began in 2008 with a goal to improve sustainable clinical labor outcomes by increasing the labor epidural analgesia rate by 10% through establishing 10 training centers within 10 years. The hypothesis was that the introduction and support of safe labor analgesia would reduce the cesarean delivery rate and result in better labor outcomes for mother and fetus. Mentoring in safe and effective labor epidural analgesia was introduced and implemented through week-long, well-structured, problem-based learning sessions with daily debriefings with multidisciplinary approach. Tawam Hospital, Johns Hopkins Medicine Regional Anesthesia, Acute Pain and Obstetric Anesthesia Educational Programs

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has a population of 5.6 million with a crude birth rate of 15.54 births/1,000 population. While the World Health Organization has a target of 15 to 20% for Cesarean section deliveries in any region, it is more than double that amount in some regions of the UAE. Furthermore, the rates of neuraxial analgesia for vaginal delivery is much below the international standards with rates as low as 3-6% in some areas. The Johns Hopkins division of International Obstetric Anesthesia has been in collaboration with Tawam Hospital in Al Ain to examine the possible reasons and barriers in using labor epidurals. For the past three years, we have sent two senior anesthesiology residents to Tawam Hospital to collect data on the labor and delivery wards as well as promote education on labor epidurals amongst both patients and medical providers. The goal is to increase neuraxial labor analgesia by eventually establishing an independent obstetrical anesthesia team that can work alongside the obstetric doctors and midwives.
