Amy Davis
“Amy stayed late and volunteered four more hours of her time to the OR on a day that we had multiple add on surgeries and the OR schedule was already at capacity in order to expedite the schedule. She alleviated the burden on remaining staff and was able to shorten schedule for that day. Thank you, Amy.” – Karen Mischka
Ivanna Joseph
“Ivanna is the best. The NP service was very busy on a Monday, and while she wasn’t the fellow on our team, she was super helpful. She listened to our admissions and was available for our questions. Appreciate you!”– Jennifer Tate
Ryan Placek
“Ryan does an amazing job analyzing complex data sets. We ask a lot of Ryan and he delivers. Thank you!!” – Jake Abernathy
Celebrating Dr. Ivor Berkowitz
Dr. Ivor Berkowitz celebrated his retirement on May 29, 2025 after 43 years at Johns Hopkins Medicine and ACCM. Colleagues, mentees, family and friends from across the country traveled to Johns Hopkins Children’s Center for the festivities during JHUSOM Alumni Reunion Weekend.
The afternoon was filled with joy and a few wonderful surprises. ELSO president and our VP and CMO for Critical Care at JHHS Dr. Dan Brodie presented a letter in honor of Dr. Berkowitz from ELSO with a joint tribute from the one and only Dr. Bob Bartlett.
Dr. Berkowitz also received news of a new ACCM award established in his honor, The Ivor Berkowitz Award for Clinical Mentorship.

José Suarez, MD, FNCS, FANA, FAAN, was awarded the highest honor given by the Chilean Society of Intensive Care Medicine (SOCHIMI): Honorary Membership. The plaque given by the SOCHIMI leadership indicates that this award is a recognition to José’s “distinguished, generous, and altruistic contributions to science and education in neurocritical care both in Chile and broadly across all Latin-American countries”. The ceremony took place at the most recent South American meeting of the Neurocritical Care Society under the auspices of the XVI Critical Care Congress of the Colombian Society of Critical Care Medicine in Medellin, Colombia on May 30, 2025.
José Suarez, MD, FNCS, FANA, FAAN, was also recognized at the Annual Dinner Gala of the Fundación Instituto Colombiano de Neurología (Colombian Neurological Institute) in Medellín on May 29, 2025 for his “outstanding services and contributions, and unwavering and altruistic support to making the inpatient, neurocritical care, and acute stroke services possible and for his invaluable educational efforts to raise the competency of our attending physicians, nurses, and learners”. Of note, the Colombian Neurological Institute is now a privately-funded (not-for-profit) foundation dedicated to providing comprehensive neurological and neurosurgical care to Colombians from all socioeconomic backgrounds, with satellite clinics in areas with high density of displaced communities from the past drug and fratricidal wars in the country: https://institutoneurologico.org/nosotros/
Alexis Thompson, MD, (Pediatric Neurocritical Care Fellow) received the Marmarou Award in the trainee poster competition, which was named after a pillar in the field of neurotrauma research, Dr. Tony Marmarou. This placed her in the Top 5 scoring poster presentations from the National Neurotrauma Society, which was held in Philadelphia on June 15-18, 2025.
Kate Vaughn, MSN, CRNA, received the April 2025 Appreciation Award from the Advanced Practice Provider Advisory Council. This award recognizes clinical excellence and the embodiment of The Johns Hopkins Hosptial.
