Please join us in congratulating Jed Wolpaw, MD, MEd, FASA, for his appointment to the position of Vice Chair of Education in the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine, effective July 1, 2025. Please also join us in expressing our sincere gratitude to Mary Beth Brady, MD, FASE, for her tremendous leadership and her impact on this role over the past eight years.
Dr. Wolpaw graduated magna cum laude with a degree in history from Brown University. He then received a master’s degree in education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and taught high school history. Subsequently, he transitioned to medicine, receiving his medical degree from the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine, where he graduated AOA and was chosen to be the student commencement speaker. He stayed at UCSF to complete his anesthesia residency. He then came to Johns Hopkins for a fellowship in critical care medicine, which he completed in 2015. After completing his fellowship, Dr. Wolpaw joined the faculty at Johns Hopkins.
Dr. Wolpaw is currently an Associate Professor in ACCM, and he is the program director for our worldrenowned residency program. In addition to running the residency program, he co-runs both the anesthesiology clerkship and the ICU clerkship. Dr. Wolpaw is the founder and host of Anesthesia and Critical Care Reviews and Commentary (ACCRAC), a podcast that focuses on interesting topics in anesthesia and critical care. The podcast has more than 60,000 unique listeners each month in over 100 countries worldwide and has garnered more than 6 million total downloads. Additionally, Dr. Wolpaw subspecializes in critical care and attends in the surgical ICUs and in the general adult ORs. His research interests include resident well-being, asynchronous methods of teaching and learning, and improving the way we teach our trainees. He speaks nationally and internationally about resident education, feedback, communication, and well-being.
In his role, Dr. Wolpaw will oversee and direct all educational initiatives within ACCM, including residency, fellowship, and continuing medical education programs. He will provide leadership and strategic direction in the design, implementation, and improvement of curricula, professional development, and mentorship across all learning levels. He will champion innovative educational tools, techniques, and resources, and he will foster collaborations with other departments, institutions, and organizations. Importantly, Dr. Wolpaw will provide his exceptional support and guidance to medical students, residents, and fellows, addressing their academic and professional needs, as well as ensuring their overall well-being.
Dr. Wolpaw looks forward to working with all members of the department to make ACCM the national leader of excellence in education. To that end, he will be meeting with interested individuals from all divisions, including faculty, clinical associates, trainees, CRNAs, RTs, and CCTs, to solicit input into a unified strategic plan and vision.
