Mass Casualty Triage Simulations

Deborah Schwengel, MD, and Robert Greenberg, MD, with the assistance of Christina Miller, MD, Adam Schiavi, MD, PhD, MS, and Hai Le, MD, led mass casualty resident simulation exercises on both college days in May. This included an active shooter in Patterson Park scenario, encouraging residents to practice skills (triage, life-saving interventions, team approaches, incident command, management of surge, etc) that were previously taught in April. On May 1, the PTECH scholars participated in a mass casualty simulation at the Johns Hopkins Simulation Center. Students were matched with medical students, residents, and doctors and given a full hands-on on experience of the conditions of the both the ICU and PACU when a hospital is overrun with a mass casualty and injury event. We would like to thank Eleanor Bennet-Gabralla, RT, for including our students in such a fruitful experience! On May 15, the Johns Hopkins Anesthesiology Simulation Lab hosted 8 PTECH scholars in their Mass Casualty triage event. PTECH students were afforded the opportunity to work with real doctors and medical students during this high-stakes simulation. The students expressed a myriad of feelings being put in such a high pressure situation but unanimously all expressed gratitude for the experience. We would like to thank Eleanor Bennett-Gabralla, RT, for setting up the experience and Christina Miller, MD, for being our boots on the ground point person.
