It is with great pleasure that we announce Dr. Sujatha Kannan as the next Richard J. Traystman Endowed Chair for Anesthesiology Research. This Chair was established to honor Dick’s great contributions to research. As many of know, Myron Yaster, M.D. was the inaugural holder of the Chair. It supported him in a number of productive research activities and it will continue to support Sujatha in this tradition of excellence in research.

Sujatha’s area of basic science research has established her as an international expert in neuro inflammation and the use of nanotechnology to ameliorate inflammation in the central nervous system. This work has a tremendous potential of demonstrating ways in which some forms of long-standing neurologic injury in children can be reversed. Her productivity in this unique and promising area has qualified her to serve on a number of NIH review boards. Along with Courtney Robertson, Sujatha has created one of finest pediatric neuro critical care services in the US. This service has been responsible for a number of successful clinical research projects. Like Myron, Sujatha has also mentored a number of successful young investigators both within and outside ACCM. Within the Department, she has tirelessly worked with the StARR administrative group to make this a very successful endeavor.

The ACCM Richard J. Traystman Chair of Research will allow her to broaden the scope of her activities both as a researcher and mentor. It will also allow her to expand the prominence of ACCM as one of the top tier research programs in the country.
