James (Jake) H Abernathy, III, MD, MPH is a Professor and Division Chief of Cardiac Anesthesiology at Johns Hopkins. Prior to joining the Johns Hopkins, Jake was Division Chief of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology at the Medical University of South Carolina. After completing medical school at the University of Alabama at Birmingham he did a residency in Anesthesiology and a fellowship in Cardiac Anesthesiology at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, MA.

Collaborating with human factors engineers and health care architects, Dr. Abernathy is investigating the impact OR space, equipment and design have on patient safety. He leads several national efforts to improve quality in the delivery of cardiac anesthesiology and surgery. Currently, he serves as Chair of the Quality and Safety Steering Committee of the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists. He is a proud husband and father.
