Dr. Mintz graduated magna cum laude from Brown University with honors in neuroscience and went on to earn his combined MD/PhD degree at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. His doctoral work on neurodevelopment in the lab of Dr. Deanna Benson sparked an interest in the effects of anesthetics on brain development, which is his major research focus. Dr. Mintz went on to residency training in anesthesiology at Columbia University, where he was selected as both a chief resident and a member of the Virginia Apgar Research Society. He completed fellowship training in Neurosurgical Anesthesiology with Dr. Eric Heyer and then continued on as faculty at Columbia University.

Dr. Mintz joined the faculty at Johns Hopkins in the Neuroanesthesiology Division in 2013. His clinical focus is on anesthetic management for intracranial neurosurgery, neurovascular surgery and major spine surgery. Dr. Mintz directs an NIH funded basic science laboratory focused on anesthetic toxicity. He is a two-time winner of the Charles Beatty Resident Teaching Award and the founder and initial director of the division’s fellowship in Neurosurgical Anesthesiology. Dr. Mintz is actively involved in scheduling and OR management as the Vice Chair for Clinical Operations. He is the current Division Chief for Neuroanesthesia and the recipient of the Thomas and Dorothy Tung Endowed Professorship.
